Arthur "Dean" Fechter, 97, Wamego, KS passed away Monday, February 19, 2018 at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Wamego.

  On March 4, 1920 Dean was born to Arthur and Julia (Picolet) Fechter in Wamego, KS.  Dean attended St. George High School before entering into the United States Army Air Force in 1941 during World War II and being honorably discharged.  He was united in marriage with Alma Lee Elder on January 6, 1943 and was blessed with three sons.  They started a crop and dairy farm in 1947 that they operated until retirement.  Alma Lee preceded Dean in death on August 4, 2014.

  He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and Harold Fechter; a sister, Edith Torrey; a son, Chuck Fechter; a daughter-in-law, Donna Fechter; a granddaughter, Brenda Fechter; and a great-granddaughter, Natalie Fechter.

  He and Alma enjoyed square dancing for many years and later, Dean became a caller for square dances.  He also enjoyed working in his metal shop, building farm equipment, tractors, etc., and working in his woodworking shop, building many pieces of furniture.  He could build almost anything out of nothing.  Some of his work, including a big wheel bicycle and a miniature pick-up, were featured in the local 4th of July parade for many years.   He loved to go deer hunting and fishing.  Dean was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church.

  He is survived by two sons, Ronnie and Harold (Connie) Fechter, Belvue, KS; two brothers, Larry (Kay), and Vincent Fechter, Wamego, KS; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Chad, Bryan, Tami, Bradley, Heidi, and Craig; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

  Mass of Christian Burial for Dean will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2018 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Wamego.  Burial will follow in the St. Bernard Cemetery.  Rosary will be held Sunday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7:00 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.  In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to the Wamego Area Veteran's Memorial fund through the Wamego Community Foundation, and St. Bernard Catholic Church, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
