Vernie Richards Obituary

Vernie E. (Brewer) Richards

Mount Gilead - Vernie E. (Brewer) Richards, age 95, of Mount Gilead, passed away Wednesday morning, March 14, 2018, at the Morrow County Hospital.

On December 20, 1922, Vernie was born in Indiana County, PA, a daughter of the late Ernest Cleveland and Lucy Anna (Clawson) Brewer.

Vernie married the love of her life, Walter Milton Richards, on January 31, 1944, in Indiana, PA. They lovingly raised six children and enjoyed fishing trips to Lake Erie and going to flea markets together. They shared over 54 wonderful years as husband and wife before he preceded her in death on June 7, 1998.

A woman of faith, Vernie was a long time member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church. She was very active in the United Methodist Women and also helped with the consignment sales and funeral dinners. She also belonged to the Williamsport Grange and the Morrow County Conservation Club. She volunteered much of her time at the Morrow County Hospital as an Orchid TWIG and also was a volunteer for Hospice of Morrow County.

Vernie was a homemaker for a good part of her life, but as the kids got older, she also worked outside of the home. She was a server for Purity Sweets, cleaned several schools and restaurants, and retired from Mount Gilead High School where she worked in the cafeteria.

Vernie enjoyed being outdoors tending to her vegetable garden and flowers. She liked to sew and always made clothes for her family. She loved to cook and bake, always making special Halloween doughnuts to hand out for trick-or-treat. Most of all, she absolutely adored time spent with her family. To many of her grandchildren she was known as "Grandma Tomato" or "Grandma Doughnut."

She will always be remembered for the love she had for her family, her fun loving attitude, and the strong independence (maybe some stubbornness also) that she always possessed.

Vernie is survived by her children: Ronald (Barbara) Richards of Ashley, OH; Shirley Fissell of Mount Gilead, OH; Roger (Kathy) Richards of Mount Gilead, OH; Carolyn "Cookie" (Robert) Armstrong of Cardington, OH; Larry Richards of Marion, OH; and Crystal (Roger) Mattix of Thornport, OH; grandchildren: Ronald S. Richards of Ashley, OH; Chad (Lorri) Richards of Cardington, OH; Wendy (Greg) Karcher of Galion, OH; Shanna (Jeremy) Moore of Mansfield, OH; Jill (Kevin) Caudill of Mansfield, OH; Robin Snopik of Mount Gilead, OH; Charity (David) Meuleman of Defiance, OH; Amanda (Steve) Swartz of Marion, OH; Rae Lynn (Brian) Denny of Corning, OH; Ashley (Adam) McGomery of Glenford, OH; Chloe Ardrey of Thornport, OH; and Stacy (Chuck) Treisch of Mount Gilead, OH; great grandchildren: Ashley, Derek, Jeremy, Garrett, Nick, Aaron, Ryan, Josh, Michael, Cassandra, Grace, Ben, Ethan, Devin, Gage, Levi, Colt, Aden, Ashton, Avery, Jacob, Paisley, Nicholas and Brice; great-great grandchildren: Joel, Gabi, Mia, Mallory, and Addalynn; special friends: Jack and Susan Pollard, Roger and Evelyn Walton, and all of her friends at Williamsport United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; parents: Ernest and Lucy; siblings: Jenny, Edna, James, and Pete; grandson Michael Armstrong and a son-in-law, Bob Fissell.

Her family will greet friends from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main Street, Mount Gilead, OH 43338. Services to honor and celebrate her life will be held there on Monday, March 19, 2018, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Stephan Bloomfield officiating and assisted by Rev. Sue Antolik. Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery.

If desired memorial contributions may be made in Vernie's memory to Hospice of Morrow County and/or to the Williamsport United Methodist Church.
