MCGILL
Harry McGill, age 86, fought the good fight, passing on to the next world in the presence of family, following a short stay at St. Catherine's Laboure
Place, Jacksonville, FL. Harry served in the U.S. Air Force during The Korean War, 1950-53. He volunteered at St. Catherine's Labor' Place as a Eucharistic Minister for 13 years, then trained at seminary, and served another 14 years at St. Catherine's Laboure Place as a Chaplain. Some of the staff remember him as "a character," endeared for his devotion and love while serving the needs of families and their loved ones, comforting them in their times of
great loss.
As a 35 year member of The Knights of Columbus, Council 648, Harry rose quickly in rank, becoming a Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He was known for his tenacity and his attention to detail and proper protocol. Some will remember him as always willing to serve, lead, and take charge. He was often known to "ramrod" ideas through committees, while at the same time was always considered thoughtful, generous and giving to those around him. It was common to hear him say, "I may not always be right, but I am never wrong." As his family, we learned to overlook his bossy, stubborn nature and love him dearly, nicknaming him "Pope Elect" or simply "Chief."
As a parishioner of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Park Street, Jacksonville, FL, for 38 years, Harry served as a Youth Leader, a Eucharistic Minister, and a Lay
Reader with a voice reminiscent of Charlton Heston reading the Ten Commandments in cinematic presentation. Harry was known to correct The Priest, without hesitation, when adherence to protocol was not strictly followed. He was fondly nicknamed by
congregants of St. Paul's as "The Bish," i.e. Bishop.
Harry is survived by his son, Courtland Hunter and his wife, Jill, his grandchildren, Andrew Hunter and Kimberly Hunter, his nephews, Michael Lanier and Mark Lanier and their children. There will be Vigil and Viewing on Friday, April 13, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 729 S. Edgewood Ave., Jacksonville, FL. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 2609 Park Street, Jacksonville, FL on Saturday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception afterward in the Fellowship Hall. The Interment, with immediate family present, will take place at The Jacksonville National Cemetery. "Goodbye, Harry, thou good and faithful servant."
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: St. Catherine's Laboure Place or St. Vincent's Medical Center, Jacksonville, FL.
