Agathe von Trapp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2010.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Agathe von Trapp, a member of the musical family whose escape from Nazi-occupied Austria was the basis for "The Sound of Music," has died, a longtime friend said Wednesday.

Von Trapp, 97, died Tuesday at a hospice in the Baltimore suburb of Towson after suffering congestive heart failure in November, said Mary Louise Kane. Kane and von Trapp lived together for five decades and ran a kindergarten at the Sacred Heart Catholic parish in nearby Glyndon until 1993.

Von Trapp was the oldest daughter of Austrian naval Capt. Georg Ritter von Trapp. His seven children by his first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp, were the basis for the singing family in the 1959 play and 1965 film, which won the Oscar for best picture.

The widowed captain had three more children with his second wife, Maria Augusta Kutschera. They performed together as the Trapp Family Singers.

Agathe, a guitarist, was represented in the film by 16-going-on-17 Liesl, played by Charmian Carr. But Agathe was far more reserved than the outgoing Liesl, Kane said.

Although Agathe admired the movie, she felt it misrepresented her father as too strict and not as the loving, caring parent he was, Kane said.

"She cried when she first saw it because of the way they portrayed him," Kane said. "She said that if it had been about another family she would have loved it."

Von Trapp wrote her memoir, "Memories Before and After The Sound of Music," published in September by Harper Paperbacks, to set the record straight, Kane said.

Johannes von Trapp, the youngest of the children, said Agathe was a private person who also was a talented sketch artist.

He said she will be buried in the spring at a cemetery at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt.

Agathe's death leaves four surviving members of the Trapp Family Singers: Maria von Trapp, 96; Rosmarie von Trapp, 81; Elenore "Lorli" von Trapp Campbell, 79; and Johannes, 71.

Miss Trapp was one of the most wonderful teachers I ever shared the classroom with at Sacred Heart. Her milk and cookies bring back fond memories. She will be greatly missed by the hundreds, if not thousands of kindergarten children she served.

Althought the Sound of Music might not have been true to your own memories, it nevertheless told a story of a family full of love and courage. This is a legacy of which to be proud. I'm sure those gone before you have now welcomed you home.

My knowledge of this family began when my parents took me to the production in Washington DC when I was 6, and I have been hooked on them since. They bought me the album, and I learned every song, and would play it non-stop. At 13, the theater in my hometown put on the production and I was Marta in that play. I am so sorry for the loss of one of these family members. My heart is with you all and my prayers will be for you as well. God Bless.

Dear Family Von Trapp so sorry to hear of Agathe passing. I am 52 and just recently watched The Sound of Music. I was so moved by the story that I investigated into the true story and I am so glad I did. the true story is as moving as the musical. I could not believe that the Captain was so strict and was very happy to find out in real life he was not. I feel sad that I had not seen the movie sooner. I would of liked to have known of this family before now. I only have been reading the true stories in the past few days and when I saw this posting about Agathe I was stunned. I thought it was an old posting. It might sound strange but I feel a loss in my own heart. My son and my mother and my stepdad visited the lodge in Stowe VT about 15 years ago when he was just a boy. He never stopped talking about it. He said he got to sing with the Von Trapp family and wrote many pages in his journal about it. You family has inspired many many people. God bless you all. The angles are going sounding even sweeter now that Agathe has joined them. My dear grandmother of 95 passed in July 2010. It was hard to have someone in your life that long and when they pass it seems so unreal. May all the memories of her heal your heart. I send my deepest sympathy. - Sarah Demers New Hampshire USA

One of my fondest memories growing up was watching the school production of the Sound of Music which my father produced in our school at the age of 8. It was my first experience to musicals. After the show was finished, my mother made clothing out of the curtains used in the show. From that day on, I followed the Von Trapp history and fell in love with your family. My condolences to your family. Agathe will be missed. Thank you to your family for entering our lives. You are a very inspiring family. Agathe's life will continue to inspire us and the strength and love that she showed to others will always be remembered.

I just watched the tribute celebration of the Von Trapp family on Oprah... It was a heartwarming reminder of the times I have watched the movie; in part and the whole, and heard the wonderful music through the years..The film has blessed many lives; brave and passionate family..amidst extremely difficult times. Heaven surely gained more than just a singer.. Can't wait until I get there to join the choir or help tune the instruments that will be played for a remarkable-never-before presentation of praise to the Lord. More than the hills will resound to the sound of music.

My deepest sympathy to Miss Kane and the Von Trapp Family. I was saddened to hear of Miss Trapp's passing. I was very fortunate to have had Miss Trapp and Miss Kane for my kndergarten teachers at Sacred Heart. My time in kindergarten is one of my most cherished childhood memories. I remember Miss Trapp trying to teach us German. I only wish that I could remember some of it. Miss Kane and Miss Trapp made that time special for me and they were such wonderful and loving teachers. I still have my kindergarten class picture and will always treasure it. I have often wondered how these ladies were doing. I know now that Miss Trapp is in God's loving arms and I wish Miss Kane a long and healthy life. God bless.

She may have worried about the negative light it shed on him, but it is quite the opposite for most people I know. My fondest memory of "Sound..." was realizing how much love and courage it took for her Father to to keep his family together.

This was one of the most courageous families I ever read about, or was prilivedged to see a movie about. The strict Father image was not the issue for me as a 14 year old, it was the way the von Trapp family worked together to keep each other safe and stay as happy as possible during the most trying of times. I would have traded place with either of them as I saw all of them as heros to each other. God Bless each of you as you face another trying time and know that God had great plans for the lady which I think with her strength and enduring love she must have fully reached this goal set by the heavenly Father.
