Jack Carter Obituary

Jack Ellis Carter, of Lodi, died September 10, 2010. He was 88 years old.
He was born April 11, 1922, in San Francisco, the son of Cecil C. Carter and Eva Margaret Graham Carter. The family moved to Modesto when he was 4 years old, where he attended local schools, graduating from Modesto High School in 1939 and attending Modesto Junior College. He received the Eagle Scout Award and was active in high school drama productions.
He enlisted in the US Navy during World War II and was a pilot in the Air Corps. He was stationed at Cape May, New Jersey and Norfolk, Virginia, where he flew anti-submarine patrol missions along the Atlantic coast.
He married Martha Lee Smith, his high school sweetheart, on July 3, 1943, in Corpus Christi, Texas, and they lived in Cape May during the war years.
After the war, he and Martha moved to Redding where he worked as shoe clerk in Burton's Shoes, later becoming a partner in what became a chain of 6 Burton's Shoes stores in central California.
The Carters arrived in Lodi in 1948 where he became managing partner of the new Burton's store on Pine Street. Burton's Shoes was successful because Jack genuinely liked his customers. He never forgot a face or a shoe size. His business motto was "We cheerfully refund and gladly exchange". After parking meters were installed downtown, he even paid his customers' parking tickets. For many years generations of loyal, satisfied customers lined up for the semi-annual sales.
During his more than 50 years as a downtown Lodi merchant, he was known for his wild sense of humor and for his public service. He was president of the Lodi Rotary Club, served as Director of the Lodi Chamber of Commerce, served on the board of Lodi Memorial Hospital and on the vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church and helped start the Senior Day Care Program at Hutchins Street Square. In 2005 he was inducted into the Community Hall of Fame for his contributions to downtown business and the community. But perhaps his proudest achievement was that he was once selected "One of Lodi's handsomest men".
He and 5 other Lodi businessmen started Lodi National Bank in 1965, which later became Mid-Cal Bank before being bought by the Bank of Stockton. He served on the Bank of Stockton Board of Directors until recently.
He is survived by Martha, his wife of 67 years, daughter Shelley Hird and son Brock Carter, grandchildren Anne Rogers, Andrew Hird, Laurel Esseff, Elizabeth Henderson, Katherine Carter and great-grandaughter Rhiannon Rogers.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm, Monday, September 27 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1055 S. Lower Sacramento Road, Lodi, CA 95242.
Memorial contributions may be sent to St. John's Building Fund or the Lodi Memorial Hospital Foundation, PO Box 3004, Lodi, CA 95241.

How I always will recall Jack's zest for life. His positive outlook and involvement with his community is a model for us all. He was always a favorite of the Stemler family and we all will have lasting memories of him. He never failed to recall the Sunday football game he invited me to participate in that resulted in Weldon's cracked ribs. A wonderful man - My prayers are with you and your family Martha. Fondly Judy

Martha, both Ellie and I are sorry to hear about Jack's passing. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and friendship. It is turely a loss for Lodi that he won't be around to joke with. Maybe Mom, Dad and he can share a picnic on some green hillside somewhere. That is how I'll remember them.

Jack was such a fun and carefree person. I loved when he would stop in and see me at the Foundation office. He will be missed! My prayers are with the family at this time - take care Martha!

My sincere sympathy goes out to Martha, Shelley and Brock. Mr. Carter was a genuine human being, a special man, a gentelman, intellegent, hardworking, and kind with a warm heart. He had a wonderful personality and was a bit of a prankster! I had the oppertunity to meet him many years ago. He was a mentor to me and someone that I always looked up too. It was an honor to be his friend.

To Carter family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. What a great man we have lost. Mr. Carter would always bring the shoes in the window because they were size 5. One would be faded. I would take them to the shoe repair next door and have them dyed the same color. I can't tell you how many shoes he gave me but when I got married in 1970, I had more than 200 pairs of shoes. Most from Mr. Carter.

He was also a hero of mine. One day a man followed me from my job in Lathrop all the way down the freeway. When I turned off the the freeway, he was still following me. I knew no one was home, so I drove downtown towards the police department. When I passed Burton's, Jack was standing outside talking to someone. I parked the car and got out. I went up to him and told him this man was following and I didn't know who he was or why. I a heartbeat, Jack went up to the man in the car (he had parked 2 spaces over) and asked him what he was doing. He told to leave and not come back in no uncertain terms. He then went in the store and called my dad to come and meet me so I wouldn't have to go home alone. He went out of way to help anyone that needed help.

We have lost a great man but we are all better off to have known him.

I will always love Jack as the guy who made me feel OK about my long feet that were almost impossible to fit with nice shoes, but not in his store. "We'll get them for you" was always his encouraging response. It meant a lot to me as a young high school teacher who happened to have Brock in her class. Both father and son were charming. He never forgot a customer and over the years continued to bring cheer whenever we met. Too bad we can't keep him forever.

I was very fortunate to have shared many memories and good times with Jack. I don't remember the exact year that Jack started to work for Burton Shoes, but after World War II, where Jack had enlisted and became an officer in the Navy Air Corp, he returned to the shoe store in Redding with my uncle, Marvin Burton. I remember that Jack told me that he "had hitch-hiked, but in his navy uniform, he had no problem getting a ride".
Marvin Burton and Senator H.T.Sedwick saw something special in Jack's
outgoing personality and his "can-do" attitude. Jack was a very active partner in the expansion of the Burton Shoe Stores, and because of the great team that developed, several stores were opened in Northern Calif.

Jack also found the time and energy to be active in Lodi: the bank, Rotary and several other local activies too numerous to mention. Jack always had time to listen to your suggestions, or problems. I remember he asked me to speak before the Lodi Rotary for a special meeting. It was to be "A Roast" in Jacks honor as past president. The roast's purpose was to take pot shots at the recipient and the Gallery and his friends, all took pot shots. All in fun, of course. I said to the Rotarions "Yea or Nay, is he a good guy?" With a standing ovation, the room vibrated with applause.

It was my honor and privilege to know a man of such great character and passion for others.

P.S.
Jack and Uncle Marvin, both agreed, that I was the worst poker player and golfer in the Annual Burton Golf Tournament.

To the Carter Family;

Jack was the best friend I have ever had. I truly hope he is now at peace.

I will always cherish the memories of working with him and for him. The camping trips were a huge plus.

To Martha, Shelly and Brock - Jack was my father's boss (Stu Hayes). I still fondly recall Jack's annual challenge to race my brother Eric and I around the block with the winner getting a nickle. Instead he had us chatting all the way and then he broke into a run at the last possible minute! He always paid up since he planned to lose the race anyway. He had such a love for life and people and everyone he came into contact with ended up feeling better about themselves somehow. What a legacy he has left behind - my sincere condolences to you all.

Martha, My condolences to you and your family. I was sorry to read of Jack's passing. He was such a part of our family when I was growing up, always doing special things for my parents and for me, esp. when I went to college. I think my favorite story of Jack and your family, is when the Hillbilly Carter's met your mother's train. It just sounds like Jack's sense of humor. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.

My deepest condonences to the Carter Family. I remember Jack from Burton's when I was a little girl, I always got a balloon on a stick and a ride on the wooden horse Merry-Go-Round. I took my own children there years later and saw a man at one of their sales with s T-shirt on that said in big bold letters "YES I WORK HERE", It was Jack...still working. He remembered me from my childhood and treated my kids with the same wit and kindness I had admired for years. Many years later I became reaquainted with Jack through LMH where i was employeed..of course nothing had changed about this wonderful man. He remembered a certain pair of shoes my son had to have (Jordan's) and remembered his size and color he finally chose, not to mention the pricy price!!He shared great stories about stunts with he and Ted H. that still keep me in stitches! A great man with a wonderful sense of humor. I am certain he will be sadly missed but all that knew him were so blessed to have him in their lives.

Jack, you will be missed. Even though we met in your later days, you were always the life of the party, which was inevitably happening whenever you were around. Although we all feel a void in our lives with your passing, you leave a wonderful family to continue your life-loving legacy.

Jack was one of kind. He was always smiling. He was intelligent and was
always ready to give me sound advice.

My prayers are with your family during this time of sorrow. Jack Carter was a true gentleman. I grew up in Lodi and, of course, always wore my "Buster Brown's". I was a classmate of Shelley's and have always been kept up to date by my mother who still lives in Lodi. God Bless

Thank you Jack Carter. The first pair of shoes, free, for all of our four children was always a very special gift. Going to Burton's show store was always a special treat - and interestingly - you always knew we wanted Buster Brown Oxfords and nothing else would do. My children still laugh about it. You made every customer you ever had feel special, not only that, you knew us outside the store when you met us anywhere. You were "one of kind". A gracious gentleman.

My heart goes out to Martha, Brock and Shelley, at whose weddihg I took casual photos that turned out to be the only record the happy couple had when the pro photographer's work went south. After that, I was never able to purchase a pair of shoes at Burton's; they were all free for me. Jack was a man of principles and empathy, and I will value his friendship (and Martha's) in whatever life is left to me.

My condolences to your family in the loss of your loved one. Growing up in Lodi, I remember "Mr. Jack" as one of the nicest men in town and always looked forward to his warm welcome when I shopped at Burtons.

Many years ago, as a young child, I needed to be outfitted with special shoes (orthotics). I remember the only place we could get them was at Burton's and Mr. Carter made sure that no one would know I had special shoes on. I will always recall this kind gesture. Blessings to your family at this time.
