Dona Platt Obituary

Dona "Dorothy" Platt passed away in her home on August 24, 2010, surrounded by loving caretakers. She was born on November 8, 1930, in Bucharest, Romania. She attended schools in Bucharest, graduating from high school in 1949. She graduated with honors from the Agronomy School at the University of Bucharest in 1954 with a major in Plant Breeding and a minor in Plant Pathology. She tried to leave Romania for a number of years, but under the Russian dictatorship was not allowed to do so. However, in December, 1959, after a six month exile on a Labor Farm, they finally let her go to Brazil, where her father had emigrated to earlier. After working for four years in the Agronomy School of the University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Dorothy obtained a job at Northrup, King and Co. in Woodland, Ca., in 1964. She was very excited about finally arriving in the U.S. and becoming a U.S. citizen, which she had dreamed about for many years. She married Alfred Platt in 1969, and they settled in Stockton, Ca. After working as a teacher's aide with SUSD, she earned a teaching credential. She and her husband moved to Lodi, where she became a teacher in the English as a Second Language program at Lodi High School and taught there for many years. She was excited about molding personalities of young people, sharing knowledge with them, and raising new American citizens. She will be missed by family, friends and neighbors.
Dorothy is survived by her husband's family members: Pat Culbertson, Margie Culbertson, Jim (Anna) Culbertson, Steve (Teresa) Culbertson, Cora Sue (Terry) Wetter.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Al, and her parents.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25, at 11a.m., at Donahue Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lodi Public Library Foundation.

Dorothy was a wonderful lady. She was always thinking of others, especially young high school students. She was most generous in offering scholarships for young students to pursue their dreams of attending college.
I enjoyed the dinners we had together and the wisdom she always shared.
Dorothy will certainly be missed and I am a better person for having known her.

Dorothy will remain in our hearts with her gentle smile, calm voice, peaceful presence and wise words. She was a great lady and a blessing in our life. We have spent high quality time with her and Al in their hospitable home and also when they returned our visits at our house. My parents in law were colleagues with her back in the Romanian Agricultural Research Institute, and I and my good friend and colleague Mike Georgescu have worked in plant breeding in Romania where Dorothy had been working before us, so we had a lot of common subjects to enjoy for hours and hours. She liked to travel and she had nice stories to share. We also received from her good advices about investments. She was beloved by her many English second language students and was always proud to tell us about them, their families, their progress and success. Her time spent on this earth was not in vain. She left behind a lot of achievements and she spread love from her noble heart to all people she met. She helped the poor and she did not spare any good word for everybody in need. We will miss her.

Please accept my sincere condolonces for Mrs. Platt. It is so good that she had the opportunity to live to be 80 years old. Because the scriptures say that our days are 70 and if by special mightiness they are 80. (Psalm 90:10) I am sure that you have so many fond memories that will comfort you and bring you joy when you think about her.

Dorothy was a blessing to all who were in the Bible study that she attended for the past few years. I am so thankful that she received Christ as her personal Savior and I have the assurance she is now with the Lord - which gives me great comfort. We will all miss her very much.

Dorothy and I were fellow teachers at Lodi High School. I greatly admired her and valued her friendship. She was very kind to me and helped me with ESL curriculum when I first started teaching students with limited English skills. She was a great lady and I am proud to have known her and to have had her in my circle of friends. Mary Cox
