Gerald Verdi Obituary

VERDI, GERALD, 72, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2007, at Suburban Hospital. Born March 8, 1936, in New York, son of James and Ann Verdi. Dr. Verdi graduated cum laude from both the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1960 and the Albany Medical School in 1965. Following medical school, he received a Navy commission and served in Vietnam from 1966-1968 on the hospital ship, the USS Repose. He received the Navy Commendation Medal, in 1967, for his performance as a surgeon. Dr. Verdi was a clinical professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Louisville Dental School and a clinical professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Louisville Medical School. In 2006, he was recognized by Louisville Magazine as the area's best cosmetic surgeon. For many years, he was very active also as a reconstructive surgeon, performing thousands of cleft lip and palate procedures, both in the US and abroad. He organized the Louisville regional cranial facial anomalies team in 1977, which was then the 9th full service cranial facial team in the world. Dr. Verdi's professional accomplishments, outstanding as they were, were surpassed by his love for his wife and family and by his generosity, friendship, and courtesy he extended to everyone he met. Dr. Verdi was a proud member of the National Italian American Federation and of the Order Sons of Italy. He was preceded in death by his father, James Verdi. He is survived by his wife Charlene Verdi; four sons, Michael, Sean (Karen), Marc, Chris (Lizzet) Verdi; three grandchildren; mother, Ann Verdi; brother, Richard Verdi. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Family will receive guests from 2-7 p.m. on Sunday at Pearson-Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Home of the Innocents.

I just ran across a photo of Dr. Verdi in our photo album. I´m forever grateful for his expertise as a facial
surgeon. In 1986, he performed surgery on our daughter´s face as an infant to remove a birthmark and followed with two more reconstructive surgeries. She was left with only a thin scar on her cheek that is barely visible today as an adult He was gentile and kind to our family. Thank you. Rest in peace.

Dr Verdi performed three reconstructive surgeries on my left ear when I was little. He took an abstract of an ear and turned it into a work of art. I'm forever grateful I don't have to go around with a giant hemangioma on my ear.
I'm sad to hear of your passing even though it was in 2007. I'll never forget you or your surgical partner.

Dr. Verdi was a wonderful man who had an extraordinary gift. He repaired a cleft lip on my husband when he was a young boy, and then did the same for my son shortly after he was born. Both my son and husband look wonderful. He was so gracious to us then, and during the loss of our young daughter. We will miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I found out today of Dr. Verdi passing. I have been his patient all of my life. . . over 30 years. Though have never felt like just a patient. He gave me hope for the future, promises to my mother, and made me proud to introduce him to my husband and children. He truly has been a part of our family, as will he always. He always offered concerns when my husband deployed and he looked at my children when I was concerned about possible genetic defects. I will continue to pray for his family's loss and hope to bring some comfort by saying that he was a wonderful man. He made a difference in many lives and I am truly blessed that he was placed in my path to guide me to who I am today. My deepest sympathy and gratitude to the family for sharing such a beloved soul.

I just found out about Dr. Verdi's death last night. I live in Florida, and I was Dr. Verdi's patient in 2002. Just from the few times I met him, I knew he was a wonderful man. He took great time and pride in his work, and I felt special, like I was his only patient. I am very saddened by his death and offer his family my deepest sympathy. After reading his obituary, I learned that I actually knew very little about him. What an incredible man! If doctors only did half the charity he performed! Again, my deepest sympathy to his mother, wife, children, grandchildren, and friends!

I don't really know what to add to all the wonderful comments for Dr. Verdi. He was my doctor for the past couple of years and I really admired and respected him. He was so much more than a plastic surgeon. He was an artist. He made you feel so good about yourself. I'll miss you Dr. Verdi.

To you, the boys and their families, and "Poop", I send my sincerest sympathies. Through all the years I knew Gerry, not one single time was I not impressed by his devotion, kindness and support to family and friends, including me in a time of need. It was apparent that he had a pure and loving heart that he shared with all. Please don't hesitate to reach out for help with anything you should need.

I extend my deepest sympathy to the Verdi family. I have been a patient of Dr. Verdi's since 1981. I always looked forward to seeing him at my annual checkup. I last saw him on December 21, and when he entered the room, he was wearing a huge colorful Christmas tie and a Santa hat that played music. I asked him if he'd been in the eggnog already and we had a big laugh. I'll always remember his kind, gentle manner and wonderful smile. He was the best!

Our grandson was treated by Dr.Verdi for a cleft lip and palate 12years ago.His skill was of an artist and his compassion to my daughter and me was deeply felt.
I always enjoyed the follow up visits with my daughter and grandson as I waited for
Dr. Verdi to stand back with a huge smile across his face as he said,"look at that nose just look at that nose" He always told my daughter, everything is going to be ok and it was.
Our hearts are broken. As a family our path to Dr. Verdi was guided. The loss of this man is felt by generations.
Thank you to the Verdi family for sharing this wonderful man.

Mrs. Verdi - I am so sad to hear of the passing of your husband. My father, Dr. Crowley, brought me to your husband when I was only 5/6 years old in the early 80's for plastic surgery and since that time I have always held a special place in my heart for him because of the wonderful care he provided me - and over the years I have continued to fondly remember my interactions with him. Wow, I am heart broken yet again by the loss of one of my wonderful surgeons who treated me through the Commision for Handicapped Children during the 70's and 80's. First Dr. Harkess and now Dr. Verdi. They were both extremely kind and caring men as well as excellant surgeons. I could never repay them for what they did for my family and myself. I always loved Dr. Verdi and how at ease he put this scared kid facing yet another surgery. I now work in the office directly above his at Suburban and was lucky enough to run into him in the elevator one day. How surprised I was that he would remember me after all these years. But that just shows you he really cared about his patients and their lives. We had a nice chat down the elevator and through the garage. I'm so glad I got to see him that last time. My deepest sympathy to his family and also his staff. He will truly be missed by all of those he touched including myself and my family.

I met Dr. Verdi 12 years ago. I was a scared, first time mother of a beautiful baby boy born with a cleft lip and palate. He reassured me and my family and walked us through the process of repair. With his gentle and kind nature and demonstrated knowledge of clefts, he quickly gained our trust and respect.

I am amazed by Dr. Verdi’s surgical abilities to perform in such tiny, precious spaces as a 10-week old baby’s lip. His work on my son is beyond exceptional – it is art.

My son had his annual check up with Dr. Verdi on Friday just before he passed away. Dr. Verdi assessed the situation and gave his insightful direction. I will miss his support and direction. Thank you Dr. Verdi for touching our lives.

Dear Mrs. Verdi and family,

My son, Patrick, was born in 1984, with a complete cleft lip and palate. My family is from the Louisville area and I had just completed a GPR in general dentistry the year before at U of L. I brought my son back to the area to have his cleft lip and palate repaired by Dr. Verdi. We have kept in touch over the years with other surgeries and follow up visits. I was so thankful that he was our surgeon; we received numerous compliments about his wonderful surgical repair. He certainly made a difference in our lives. He will be missed by all.

Sincerely,

I have been Dr. Verdi's nurse since 1998. He not only taught me about medicine and surgery but he taught me about life...to live it with passion. Dr. Verdi was an incredibly gifted surgeon...his skill was always amazing to me. He truly cared about his patients and had a heartfelt desire to always help people. He loved his life and he loved sharing his gift as a physician. He enjoyed making people happy and was one of the most caring, giving individuals I have ever known. He wasn't just my employer...he was my friend. He always had a way of making you feel special. There is an emptiness in my heart and he will be greatly missed. He adored his wife, was proud of his sons and was so excited about his expected grandchild. My thoughts and prayers are with Char, his sons and his family. I feel truly blessed to have had the priveledge of knowing him. There will never be another Dr. Verdi...

To the Verdi Family and His Staff,

Listed below is a blog entry that is posted on my weight loss web page. Dr. Verdi will be missed but his memory will live on.

I Thessalonians 4:13-14 (NIV)

"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him."

This morning (12/30/07) I learned that Dr. Verdi, (the surgeon who performed my abdominoplasty a few weeks ago) passed away on Friday. Dr. Verdi was no mere surgeon, he was a kind-hearted person and had become a dear friend. Words will not be able to express how much he will be missed. When I was in his office this past Wednesday, I watched all of the children, teens, men and women who were entering and exiting the office. You could tell that by the expressions on their faces, his work was not only changing people for the better on the outside, but on the inside as well.

When he examined me, he indicated that he had a doctor's appointment, but wanted to stop in and see me for himself. He commented on how well, I was progressing then took the time to tell me about how much he enjoyed the Holiday with his family. During my previous appointment, I had promised to bring in some before pictures (when I weighed 400+ lbs.) as well as my recent before surgery pictures. Since he was in a hurry, I didn't want to bother him so I just left my pictures stacked on my clothes (I was sporting one of those stylish paper gowns). He noticed the pictures on his own and asked to take a look at them. He was very complimentary and continued to talk to me about my final weight loss goals. As he was preparing to leave, he said that he wanted to see me in 3 to 4 weeks and thanked me for the kind note that I wrote to him in the Christmas card that I sent to him. I thought WOW, out of the 1,000s of cards that he received, he took the time to read mine.

Later while the nurses were removing my stitches, Dr. Verdi called to see how everything was going with me and he asked them several questions as to how things were going with the stitch removal. When the nurse hung-up, she commented on how thorough he was. I added that not only was he thorough, but he was thoughtful. I was amazed that even though he had his own doctor's appointment he called back to check on li'l ole me. But that's just how he was. The Saturday night after my surgery, he and his wife had dinner plans. On their way to dinner he asked his wife to stop by the hospital while he ran into check on li'l ole me...WOW!

Dr. Verdi will be sorely missed. His work was not just a profession, but a ministry. Even though I have been crying my eyes out, I don't weep as those who have no hope...I KNOW that I will see him again!

Dear Mrs. Verdi and Family,

Our daughter, Olivia, was born in January 1994 with a bilateral cleft lip/palate. We traveled from Danville in cold snowy weather when she was 5 days old to meet with Dr. Verdi for the initial visit. As first time parents we were so frightened and upset for our child. But, he put our minds at ease. Over the past 14 years he has been so good to her and done excellent work. Every physician that has worked with Olivia remarks what a wonderful repair she has. We are forever grateful to Dr. Verdi for his kindness and expertise. Our prayers are with your family.

Charlene and family, we didn't have the pleasure of knowing Dr. Verdi very long, but in his case, it didn't take long to appreciate what an unusual guy he was. He was truly a gift from God and now he has been called home. Please know that you and your family are in our prayers. Your neighbors, Carl and Colleen Schoenbachler

To Family of Dr. Verdi,
We first met Dr. Verdi in July of 1979, after the birth of our daughter in April. Our daughter was born with a huge blood tumor on her lower lip that literally destroyed half of her lower lip. After being told that nothing could be done for her (from another plastic surgeon in Nashville, Tn.) we found Dr. Verdi and he assured us he would take care of her, after many surgeries he performed what we considered a miracle. He was such a caring wonderful person and we have kept in contact through Christmas Cards and he always wanted an update on our beautiful daughter. The last time we were in the office Lori was in school at UK and she just wanted to go back to see him since she had grown up. We loved him and so grateful for his wisdom and were deeply sadden to hear of his passing. Please know that you and your family will be in our prayers at this time.

To Dr. Verdi's family and staff - I am very sorry for your loss. I was shocked to say the least when I learned of his death. Dr. Verdi changed my life with an Extreme Makeover in 2003. He was the sweetest man. I could never thank he and his staff enough for what they did for me.
He was a great person!
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time of sadness.

To The Family:
I was saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Verdi. I worked with him (in the Cleft Lip and Palate and Plastic clinics at Kosair Hospital) when he first came to Louisville. He was a very kind and special doctor.

My sympathy goes out to all of the family.

Dear Charlene,
Your husband was without a doubt the most loving, caring man I ever met. I remember how he smiled when I brought him the "doggie bags" for your new puppy. I remember how the both of you came to the office in your formal wear when I had a
little surgical complication. What a caring, loving couple. He always made you feel as if you were the only patient he had. I will miss him immensely.

Mike,
It is my belief that when we leave this world what we leave behind places our mark on the world. Your father helped so many people, including my brother, that his mark will remain in the heart, soul & deeds of those left to carry on. Blessings to you and your family.

I was a patient of Dr. Verdi's. I was 10 when I met him for the first time and for the first six months or so of our realationship he was my least favorite person. Somehow even though I always gave him a hard way, I felt safe in his care, I felt like I was going to be ok. I was given six weeks to live in December 1986. I am 31 now with two kids. Dr Verdi and I remained friends all this time. He was never too busy for me or my kids. In 1986 I couldn't wait to get away from him. Now I just wish I one more chance to tell him what he has meant to my family and myself. He was an amazing man and will truely be missed by all. My condolences to the family.

To the family of Dr. Verdi,
I wanted to let you know what an incredible friend and surgeon I had in your husband/father. I was a patient of his from the year I was born (1974) until I was well into my teenage years. He performed many operations on me to correct my cleft/lip and palate. He always told me I was pretty. That always made me smile... He will be greatly missed. May god bless you during this time.
