Gail Schwartz Obituary

SCHWARTZ, GAIL CASSEN 67, of Louisville, died Saturday, January 7, 2006, after a spirited battle with cancer. She was a graduate of Indiana University and a member of Mortor Board and the IU Foundation. After earning her Masters at Ohio State University, she taught at the University of Chicago, Rockford College, Nazareth College and Spalding University. As co-owner of A & G Enterprises, Gail was one of the early developers of the Historic East Market Street District. She was co-owner of Artemisia Restaurant and a founding general partner of Sulyngabel Farms. Gail is a past Chair of the Young Women's Division and the Women's Division of the United Jewish Campaign, past president of B'nai Brith Women, past co-president of the Temple Sisterhood, a member of The Temple and past Chair of the two 5101 variety shows at The Temple. Gail was a long-time sports enthusiast and was inducted into the Jewish Community Center's Sports Hall of Fame. She was a 7-time Women's Golf Champion at Standard Country Club, a long-time player in tennis leagues and an avid golfer in Falls City and District play. For years, Gail coached her sons' baseball teams and was Commissioner of the JCC Little League. She was preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice K. and Manuel S. Cassen of Indianapolis, IN. Survivors include her sons, Matt (Cindy) and Scott (Kim) of Louisville and Dr. Jeff (Dr. Robin) of Pensacola, FL; business and life partner, Ann L. Hargis; sisters, Lynn C. Goddy (Dr. Leonard), Susan C. Gordon of Boca Raton, FL, and Isabel Cassen (Dr. Michael Stern) of Jefferson, MD; grandchildren, Bradley, Carly, Chelsea, Bentlea, Carter, Gavin and Noah; and seven nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday at Herman Meyer & Son, 1338 Ellison Avenue, with burial in The Temple Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. on Monday. What a wonderful lady Gail was. I enjoyed getting to know her as a "professional neighbor" on East Market and always enjoyed seeing her at Artemisia, as well as other places around town. She will be sorely missed! My deepest sympathies to her entire family.
