As one of David's summer camp friends for many years, I was blessed at having the chance to see him after 20+ years and have him meet my family at our camp reunion 3 years ago. A group of us spent the first evening trying to search him down and as it wouldn't have been the same without him there as David was a big part of our summer family. It truly touched my heart getting to see him after all those years. I have never seen anyone that was so determined and have such a positive attitude with all that he had been through in his adult life and was an inspiration to us all. His courage and zeal for life truly inspired my kids and since that summer asked often if I knew how he was. I am truly glad they had a chance to meet him. He was a true role model to us all of how to live. I was truly saddened to hear of his passing and my and my family's prayers go out to his family at this time. -- Karen Fischer and family.

Dear loved ones, David's Camp Mountain Lake friends have just learned of his passing. Our hearts are heavy and sad. We have each been blessed to have shared in his life and to have known him. David was a truly special person all of his life, even when cancer did not seem like a possibility to any of us. His strength in his faith and in his fight against cancer is inspiring today and forever for those of us who knew him. David had certainly touched many lives during his. Please feel our prayers support you. Laura Cox

Kathy, You and your family have touch my life in many ways eventhough I have only met you all briefly on several occasions.   My brothers ...Danny, Bruck, Bill and Bobby Tafel all have shared many experiences with you and David throughout the years and are devoted friends. I wanted you to know that my daughter Lee was committed to run the San Diego marathon last Sunday June 1 to honour of  my brother, Bill Tafel  but was so touched by David's courage that he too was an inspiration for her in the  Leukemia Team in Training efforts.  I was totally overwhelmed and emotionally touched at the number of  commited individuals wearing purple jerseys which stood out of the thousands of runners raising funds for the Leukemia Society.   Please know that you and your family have touched our lives and that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Cathy, Will and Gus,

We loved David so dearly. We claimed him as our own. He (and later, you!)was our wonderful, loving neighbor for 6 years on St. Germaine. He was a bright light on that street, to say the least. He always had a project going which was testament to him not wanting to sqander one moment of his life. He was artistic, athletic and fun loving. He had a deep faith and walked with such confidence in God and acceptance of God's will in his life. He helped us so much with carrying forth a positive attitude when our daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with a chronic illness. He gave her hugs. He always had her on his radar. He loved my boys, too. He let them play in his rocks out front and never scolded them when they accidentaly "borrowed" a few. He was an inspiration to my husband with his handiwork around the house. We saw him last December when we came to town and I remember waiting about 10 minutes for him to answer the door. I said to the kids, keep ringing! I am not coming all this way and not seeing David and Cathy and their boys and giving them a hug. So, they came to the door and ushered us in. Of course, David had a tool belt on. He was so proud of his boys. He remarked about his boys' gifts. That Will seemed to be more into sports while Gus was a musician. He was a great dad. Cathy, you have always carried this burden so well. You are such a soldier of Christ. We love you so much and our heart aches for you and your boys. I do have pictures from our visit which I will send to you in time. I lost my oldest brother to melanoma this past December and know how helpless one feels against this disease. David gave it such a valiant fight. What a man you married. I pray that our dear Lord and our Blessed Mother will comfort you all as you are enveloped with the empathy of all of your friends at David's death. Always remember that death is life. David is gone to his eternal reward. A well deserved reward. You will be with him forever in paridise, and until then, he will be the saint we all need, watching over us from heaven.

Cathy,

I got the news this morning and am just devastated. I am truly belssed for having known him.

I could share literally hundreds of instances where David inspired me in some way - either through his words or his outlook on life. He will continue to do so for may years to come.

I was David's junior high school teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes School. He was one of my favorite students because he was kind, caring, and interesting. Clearly this great kid became a great man. This is a sad day indeed.

Cathy,

Marlene and I remember meeting you and the boys with David at The Fishery, and how David had such a positive attitude in spite of all he had been through. Lance Armstrong was certainly his Mentor. Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with you and your family.

As you know, I had known David for thirty years or more from working with his dad as his CPA when he owned Bitner's. David was always a kind, gentle person, who was always happy and whose presence made others happy as well.

Much of this was a reflection of his mother and dad, as well his grandparents. It has been my pleasure to work with all of them over the years, as well as with Bill Jr and Patti.

David was very good at his work and took great pleasure in the results he accomplished. Now he has accomplished the ultimate result we all strive for, and is probably already making plans to restore God's mansion to it's original condition. He is surely up for the challenge.

God bless and guide you, Will and Gus.

Cathy, Will & Gus- May the strength of David’s love will help guide you through this difficult time.

I am honored to have known David and will forever admire the dedication and love he had for his family, friends and all those he encountered. Although he is no longer with us, he remains in our hearts forever.

David will always be an inspiration to those of us fortunate enough to have known him. The last time I saw Dave was in downtown Louisville. He was riding Will around on his bike. David loved his family so much. He couldn't of lived so long without the extraordinary love of Cathy, Will and Gus. They are an amazing family.

Though I have not lived in Louisville in the last 25 years, I remember Dave from school and he was always there for someone who needed a friend. I am sure that never changed . Please accept my deepest sympathies. He will be greatly missed.

I was so very sorry to hear about the loss of David. I didn’t keep in frequent touch with David, but as a runner in Louisville, would see him at local races (where he usually passed me on Iroquios hill!) or in St. Matthews. I’m compelled to write because it was always such a joy to see him and hear the latest family news. He will be dearly missed, and your family will be in my thoughts.

Cathy,

I was so sorry to hear about David's passing. It was a true kick to the stomach when I heard. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the kids at this time of sadness. David will be missed terribly. Your strength and faith was what kept you going through David's ordeal. May God bless you with that same strength in the coming weeks and months for Gus and Will's sake.

I met David at Lakeside last summer. We were both swimming in the 25 yard lap pool. He told me some of this story and challenge with cancer over the years. David touched me with his smile, humor and his kindness in just that short time we talked. I could tell he was a very happy man and that he loved life and his family very much...no matter what was happening that challenged him. David, you are loved by so many....as I think of you my heart opens with gratitude and love knowing all the people you touched and loved in your life.
God is holding You and Your family and Friends always and in all ways.
Love you peaceful warrior!

He and I had spoken on a few occasions about this disease, cancer… “We are the lucky ones, those of us with cancer. We get to see life differently than most.”
I will celebrate his life, and smile as I think of him and the joy and inspiration that he brought to others.

I was a classmate of Dave's at Hampden-Sydney College. I recall his smile and laughter which was ever-present and genuine. He made the tough days easier.....and the fun days better. Even though I had lost touch with him these past few years....it is evident he carried this spirit to the end. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Cathy, Will & Gus,

I am so saddened by the loss of David. Although I have not seen him for quite a while, I have known him for many years and I can say that without a doubt he was one of the most genuine and kind persons I have ever encountered. I feel truely blessed to have known him. He was a fighter and will be missed by all. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Though I have lived away from Louisville for years I still recall David as a friendly high school classmate at St. X. I have no doubt that his life's purpose was to serve both his family and community with distinction.

I've sat down three times and tried to type something that would express how much David meant to me and how he touched my life. It's so hard to put it into words and I am so saddened about his passing.

What I do know for sure is if anyone spent five minutes with him they would know what a true gem he was and they would understand what a tragic loss this is.

David was so inspirational in every aspect of his life and he had an amazing ability to make people feel like they could do anything they set their mind to and at times I felt as though he was going to conquer the world.

I'll never forget the first day I met David. He was coming into the hospital for his high dose treatment and as he was walking down the hall the other nurses were scurrying to get away because no one wanted him assigned to them. The reason being, because David had a tendency to be a little hardheaded at times. I signed up for the challenge because what they saw as hardheadedness I saw as someone who was a fighter and had the will to live. My life changed from that moment on.

He was such a fighter. He always had a postitive attitude and he fought till the end. I used to laugh at him when he was in the hospital because he would constantly chase people out of his room if they showed the slightest bit of negativity. He had several physicians running out of his room and even banned a few from ever returning. Ha ha...still makes me laugh.

I've never had a patient touch my life as David did. I was truly blessed to be his nurse and to call him my friend and I will never forget him.

He lived strong and will forever shine bright!

Kathy,

I am so very sorry for your loss. David was an incredible man. He was truly an inspiration to all and set an example to all those he came across. I am out of town, but heard the news last night. While I may not return in time to stop by visitation, please know you are all in our prayers. I am running the Chicago Marathon this fall and participating in the Teams in Training and will dedicate my efforts to David's memory and legacy.

With deepest sympathies.

Cathy, Will, and Gus,
Words cannot describe that sadness that I feel over the loss of David. He was the most incredible person and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to share part of my life with him. He fought a long battle but did it with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He taught us all the true meaning of life and friendship. Although David is gone he will never be forgotten. His spirit will live on in Will and Gus and all of the people who's lives he touched. Our thoughts are with you today and everyday. He's already watching over you and you know he's already got his mom (and others) laughing up above.
All our love!
