Hope Victoria Vlahos
devoted daughter, loving sister and aunt
Salem Hope Victoria Vlahos, formerly of Marblehead, Ma died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Grosvenor Park Nursing Center in Salem, MA, after a brief, unexpected illness.
Ms. Vlahos was born April 19, 1926 in Lowell, the youngest child of John and Vasilike (née, Govostes) Vlahos, both successful business owners in that city. She graduated in 1946 from Westbrook College, the University of New England in Portland, Maine and went on immediately to work for a number of years as nurse-receptionist in the offices of, Dr. Edgar M. Holmes of Boston, at that time one of New England's leading plastic surgeons.
She became President of Vlahos Realty Corporation of Lowell in 1979. Modest about her accomplishments, she was approached by Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who of Professional and Business Women but declined several times to be profiled in either publication. She was a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody and formerly of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Lowell.
Surviving are her eldest and youngest sisters, respectively, Diana Vlahos Markessinis of Lewes, and Wilmington, DE, and Anastasia (Anna) Vlahos Chiungos of Chelmsford; six nieces and nephews, for whom she was "Auntie Hopie," Dr. Joan Markessini of Arlington, VA, Mrs. Victoria Anne Chiungos Yoakum, John Steven Chiungos, Mark John Chiungos, W. Roy Hamond and Thomas Hamond, all of MA; and four grand-nieces, Diana Beatrice Markessinis of CA, Tara and Rebecca Yoakum of MA, and Stephanie Chiungos, also of MA.
VLAHOS In Salem, MA died October 11, 2008, at Grosvenor Park after a brief illness. Hope V. Vlahos, formerly of Marblehead aged 82. Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS FUNERAL HOME, 122 Princeton Blvd at Chester and Harvard Sts. on Thursday from 4 to 6 PM. Funeral Service on Friday 11:30AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St. Peabody with Reverend John Govostes, Pastor of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, Ipswich and Hope's first cousin, and Reverend Panteleimon Klostri of Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church. Interment in Edson Cemetery, Gorham St., Lowell in the Vlahos family plot where Hope's parents, brothers, and two sisters rest in peace. Hope's sister Electra was laid to rest a year ago by the side of her husband W. Robert Hamond of Marblehead.
