Chuck was one of the many Greek Americans who loved his little piece of the world at Liberty and School streets like noone could imagine. I believe Chuck should be remebered as one of Lowell greatest sons, and someone I will remember for the rest of my life.

Dear Effie and Sam,
Dale and I as well as our sons were very saddened by the call from Sam that his precious brother had passed away. My brother John and I have so many warm and fuzzy memories of Chuck as we'd wander through his store each time we visited Lowell and were told to take whatever we wanted up to Thea Panayo for her to fix for us. I remember that he even let me run the register.
After I grew up and married and had two boys, he always remembered them at Christmas. He was truly a kind and gentle man whom we all loved dearly. May God heal the pain in your hearts.
Love,
Ethel Ann (Pappas)

Sad to hear of Chuck's passing. He is an unforgettable character and a large part of memories of my teenage (1950s) years. To go into Chuck's Variety was to enter a whole other world. There were so many little rooms, nooks and crannies that contained a thousand different items, I couldn't help but wonder how he and Effie could ever keep track of what they had or how they would replenish what was sold.
Our gang, The Highland Bulldogs, hung out at Chuck's Corner, and Chuck would always counsel us to "be good boys". Chuck was kind, generous and forgiving, and I do not recall his ever raising his voice. I stopped in to see chuck, around 10 years back, after not having seen him for about 40 years. He gave me his sideways look, and then his wry smile, and called me by name. I was touched.
Chuck is in my prayers, as are Effie and all his family.

Chuck will always be remember by my family for his generosity and infectious smile. He was such a great and wonderful man. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him and his heart of gold. We love you Chuck - your cousin Eva M. and family, (my children adored you.)

Chuck was a good guy, I remember him fondly, I used to clean his yard, his car, shovel snow etc, but more importantly everyone in the area knew they could depend on him even if they had no money. I am deeply saddened by your loss.

Dear Chuck,
The day the store closed was tough for me, this week is tougher, because the final chapter was written. I want to thank you for all you gave me. You taught me math,
"one and one are four, two and two are eight". Kid Canvasback will always live on and never lose another fight! There can never be another "CHUCK'S", but the store is still there, and will always be in our hearts. I finally met Sam, and he is all you said he was. The cast of characters from Chuck's is long and varied, each with a story, none as great as yours, though. That corner is yours for eternity, appropriately named. I see people from the store all over the city, I refer to them affectionately as "Chuckies", and they all know what I mean. We'll carry on without you, but not liking it, and know that someday we will all be back at the new Chuck's, where we'll still be able to make our own coffee, and stay as long as we want....as long as we don't block the door!! Goodbye Chuck, you're the best!

"Chucks" was a landmark for all the kids of the area. Chuck always had a smile on his face and was great to all of us kids growing up. He was a very nice man.

Effie -
We are sorry to hear of your loss. We lived down the street from 'Chucks' and will always remember his stories and welcoming manner. There will never be another 'Chucks' nor another Chuck -he certainly was one of a kind. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
