Alfred Bakunas Obituary

Alfred J. Bakunas of Lowell, decorated Army vet, WWII; 86 LOWELL Mr. Alfred J. Bakunas, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died Thursday, December 4th, 2008, in Lowell, after an extended illness, aged 86 years. He was a World War II Army veteran. Born in Lowell on December 21, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anelia (Bacon) Bakunas. Alfred received his education in the Lowell school system. After his schooling, he became associated with the former Curran & Morton Co., in Lowell, as a warehouseman. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Army, serving with Company 1 393rd Infantry. Alfred and his company stormed Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was the recipient of the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Rifle CAL 30 M1, the American Theater Campaign Medal, EAMET Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, and the Purple Heart on July 20, 1944, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was Honorably Discharged on November 19, 1945. Returning to Lowell, Mr. Bakunas went to work for Raytheon, as a machine operator for many years. According to family members, Alfred was quite a dancer; he loved to dance, and was a great sports fan of the Boston Red Sox's and the New England Patriots. Surviving him is his loving daughter, Patricia B. Gouveia of Lowell; also a niece, and two nephews. He was the brother of the late Joseph Bakunas, and Blanche Berthel.
