Guardsman Neil "Tony" Downes

Neil Downes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 12, 2007.
GRENADIER Guardsman Neil ‘Tony’ Downes died in action while serving in Afghanistan. His heartbroken mother says that a letter he left behind - to be opened in the event of his death - said he 'did what he had to do'. Sheryl Downes says her 20-year-old son, from Droylsden, ‘died a hero" serving his country. Guardsman Downes was with the First Battalion The Grenadier Guards when he was fatally injured after a landmine exploded under his vehicle while on patrol in the volatile Helmand province. He had been in the Army since he was 17 and had already completed a tour of Iraq. Guardsman Downes was the 60th member of the armed forces to die in Afghanistan since the start of operations in November, 2001. He had been serving in the country for 12 weeks. He was on patrol with the Afghan National Army in an operation to widen and deepen irrigation ditches. He was the gunner in a vehicle that took the brunt of the blast, which hurt four others. Commanding officers and close friends described him as a `resolute and steadfast friend' and a 'remarkable soldier'. Mrs Downes says of her son: "All Tony ever wanted to do was to be in the Army. It was his life. His studies were his priority at school and he achieved 16 GCSEs, but as soon as he could he joined up for the Army. We are very proud that he served as a soldier. We wouldn't have stood in his way. "I just want everyone to know that we think our son died a hero, because he was." Before he left for Afghanistan, Guardsman Downes wrote a letter to his mother and father, Ronnie, to be opened only in the event of his death. In the letter he wrote: "Please do not be mad at what has happened. I did what I had to do and serving the British Army was it. "Again, don't be sad. Celebrate my life because I love you and I will see you all again." He leaves a brother Nathan, two sisters Katie and Jodie, a step-brother Mark, a step-sister Tracy and a girlfriend, Jane. Teachers at his former school, Middleton Technology School, in Middleton, say staff and pupils are mourning the loss of a ‘bright and happy' student.

I just saw a documentary "Guarding The Queen" about the Grenadier Guards that was made a few years ago. I'm a retired Brit living in The States and only just watched it today January 7th 2013. The piece on Tony grabbed my heart and after the tears I felt compelled to write to his family. So I went searching and found this site. Mr.Mrs.Downes, Your son was and still is a bright light for us all young and old. I'm 68 yet once again I have learned something of value from one so much younger than me. The kindness and wisdom in his lettter will stay with me, it was a lesson in pure love and I am honoured to have been able to listen to it. As your son believed so do I and that is that we'll all meet again in The Lord's light. To meet him will be a blessing and a privilege. I send love and comfort to you both and all your family. I will always be grateful to the wonderful young people who put themselves in harm's way in order that we should come to no harm. Tony's sacrifice will never be forgotten, men like Tony ARE England and all that England stands for.

Tony, it has been a year since you were taken away from us and everyone still misses you so so much. I still look at your picture and think why you, and I can only think that god needed an angel to look over your family. It still makes me sad, but I am also so proud at the same time. Your family must be bursting with pride for you. I hope you look after yourself and whoever you may have met where you are, you are at peace and we all look up to you in more ways than one.

Take care fellow cheeky V drinker!

I taught Tony Maths at Middleton and he was such a great student. I was saddened by this news and send best wishes to all the family. Living in America there is news every day about the unnecessary loss of such young lives, but I know it was Tony's wish to serve his country. You must be so proud of your son, he died a hero doing the job he loved so much. My thoughts are with you all.
