Roland Boardman Obituary

MANASSAS, Va. -- Roland C. Boardman, of Manassas and East Boothbay, Maine, passed away on March 7, 2009, after a brief illness.

Mr. Boardman was born in Gardiner, Maine, on Feb. 19, 1941, the son of Charles R. and Gretchen M (Nowell) Boardman, who predeceased him.

He graduated from Gardiner High School in 1959, where he was active in sports. He was twice selected to the Kennebec Valley (Maine) basketball All-Star Team. Following high school, he entered the Army, attaining the rank of Sp-5. He graduated from the Army Finance School at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Ind., and was then posted to Nuremburg, Germany.

He continued playing basketball in the Army, and was on the base basketball team wherever he was assigned. While assigned to Nuremburg, his team traveled much of France and Germany playing at the many United States military bases located there. He was honorably discharged in 1962.

Upon discharge from the Army, he entered the University of Maine, Orono, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1966. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He later obtained a master of business administration degree from Adelphi University, Garden City, N.Y., in 1977.

After graduation from the University of Maine and his marriage to the former Nancy Frances Mudge, of Augusta, Maine, to whom was married until his death, he joined Mobil Oil Corporation in Albany, N.Y., and was shortly transferred to their world headquarters in New York City. He remained with Mobil for his entire career of nearly 31 years, retiring in 1996.

Assignments include various managerial financial positions in Mobil's U.S. domestic divisions and their headquarters in New York City, and later in Fairfax.

He and his wife, Nancy, often vacationed in the Boothbay, Maine, area, and, in 1999, they purchased a home in East Boothbay, where they had spent each summer since.

He enjoyed playing golf in the fall and spring in Virginia where Mobil, now Exxon Mobil, has a large retiree organization, and with many of his old Gardiner High School friends in the summer.

In addition to his wife, he leaves one daughter, Wendy, of Fairfax; a grandson, Shane Bowling, of Manassas; one brother, Ronald, of Augusta; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, ME 04345.

Burial will be in the family plot at Orff's Corner Cemetery in Jefferson, Maine, at a later date.

Online condolences may be sent to his family at www.foun dandsons.com.

Nancy,
It is difficult to find words of comfort for you and Wendy during this time of bereavement. You and Roland were a great team always caring for others, especially your family. When our Mobil career paths crossed for the first time in Fairfax, it did not take long to realize that Roland was a compassionate and trustworthy individual with a sense of wittiness. Our friendship developed through the years prior to our retirements. It was obvious that he loved and cared for his family very much which was fortified by his phone call to me earlier this year. Be happy that you and Roland lived your dream to return to Maine even partially during the past several years as you have established many memories, visited family, and made new acquaintances to offer support for your anticipated return to Maine. Be assured you are in our thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to contact Sharon and me should you need anything.

Nancy and Wendy, Uncle Roland was one of the kindest men I have had the privilege of knowing. He was a very special person that cared more about others then himself. We are all grieving because the world has lost a special person. I will never forget him and will remember the many fond memories of him as part of my life.
