BURNHAM -- Wendell B. Braley Sr., 89, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Woodlawn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Skowhegan.
He was born in Burnham on March 28, 1919, the son of Bert and Grace (Bemis) Braley.
Wendell was educated in the Burnham schools. He married the former Beulah M. Ingersol in 1938 and they resided in Burnham and raised their children.
He was in explosives handling for the U.S. Coast Guard. He was self-employed as a woodsman for many years until he had a tragic accident and then was employed in a shoe factory in Newport.
Wendell was a self-taught carpenter and mechanic. He could build and repair just about anything. He loved the outdoors, especially Mount Katahdin at Baxter State Park where he loved to hike. He also loved the Maine coast, where he would dig for clams and then steam them over an open fire.
Wendell was an active member of the Newport Church of Christ until he was admitted to Woodlawn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center due to ill health.
Wendell was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Beulah; his son Jimmy; a grandson, Doug, a great-grandson, Derek; a stepmother, Sadie; stepfather, Frederick Sr.; sisters, Elvena, Lucille, and Adeline; and brothers, Harold, Francis, and Fredrick Jr. "Jughead."
He is survived by his daughters, Elaine and her husband, Buddy, Jane, Mary and her friend, Freeman; sons, Wink and his wife, Cheryl, Matthew and his wife, Ellen, Jonathan, Jody and his wife, Debbie, and Timmy and his companion, Heather; grandchildren, Danny, Randy, Kathy, Scott, Wendy, Michael, Penny, Julie, Joe, Freeman, Stacy, Anthony, Melissa, Jeremy and Brandon; sisters, Eleanor, Hilda and Amelia; brothers, Tommy and Steven; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
We love you Dad and Grampie.
At the family's request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will take place at Reynolds Cemetery in Burnham in the spring.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Wendell's memory to the Newport Church of Christ, 11 Mill St., Newport, ME 04953.
