Barbara Caswell Obituary

FAIRFIELD -- Barbara Jean (Thibodeau) Caswell, formerly of Center Road in Fairfield, went to rest peacefully Tuesday, March 10, 2009.

She was born March 1, 1961, in Gardiner, the daughter of Robert Edward Caswell and Nancy Lee (Mar) Caswell. She fought courageously against a lifelong illness. In her time here she showed us how to face one's own mortality every day, yet live to the fullest. She will be missed and dearly remembered by any and all whose lives she has touched for her enormous heart, endless capacity for forgiveness, great cooking, many collections, and love of sudoku and Pepsi.

She is survived by both her mother and father; her two children, Hilary and Travis Thibodeau; as well as her lifelong companion, Michael Thibodeau. Other survivors include her siblings: Robert Caswell, Beth Palmer-Gay and her husband, Mike, Richard Caswell, Dennis Caswell, Charles Caswell and his wife, Penny, Ronald Caswell, and Darell Caswell and his wife, Kelly; and many other relatives and friends she considered family.

Among survivors are many special cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and "adopted" children she adored throughout her life and without whose undying love and devotion to cribbage, cards, Scrabble, telling stories, making puzzles, opening gifts, doing crafts, teasing, swimming and countless other entertaining activities, she would not have been able to laugh and smile her whole life through. You are all her kids.

Her family wishes to thank the staff of the critical care unit at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, for their exceptional care and understanding. To her favorite personal care assistant (her angel) Hope, thank you for caring for our mother in her time of need.

Graveside services will take place in West Gardiner later this spring. The family is planning a gathering of all who knew her to share in the joy and happiness of her life with a celebration later this month.

She was predeceased by her brother, Dale Caswell; a special close cousin, Clarence York, and several other friends and relatives. We know they are all together and smiling now. She wanted us all to know that life is short, but sweet, and that hers was the sweetest.

Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner.

I went to school with Barbara, we got along very well. We lost touch shortly after that but, I found myself wondering how she's doing. We shared the exact same b-day. I now know that it looks like she was loved and had a happy life, despite obstacles. Sending all family and friends peaceful thoughts to get through this.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Ourhearts are a little sadder today because the world has lost a beautiful person...however, it is tempered with the smiles that she has favored us with over the years. We'll miss your smile, Barb, and will always admire your strength and perserverance! God Speed!
