February 26, 2009

Katheen Eldrid led the charge against her rare sarcoma cancer (P.N.E.T.). We first met Kathy at Maine Medical Center’s “ I Can Cope” cancer support group in 1993. My late husband, Tom Dowling and I didn’t know what to expect from the group. We were struggling to understand advanced melanoma and its impact on our lives. Meeting Kathy was a gift. She opened up her life sharing when and how she first learned about her cancer. Kathy was an invaluable resource and friend. For the past 16 years, Kathy has worked diligently every day emailing, researching, educating, and networking with hundreds of people throughout the world attempting to find new treatments to fight cancer. Kathy was my friend and I’m grateful and honored to have been apart of her life and journey. She participated in alternative treatments that had positive results compared to others that used traditional methods. Kathy touched all of us with her love, spiritual energy, her passion, optimism and bravery. She was an inspiration and we are grateful for her generosity, kindness and humor..she made the world a better place. In light of her spirit and her many contributions I hope we can continue her mission and encourage our medical professionals, politicians and social entrepreneurs to invest and develop alternate cancer treatments. It’s clear chemotherapy and radiation are not the answer for every cancer. Kathy was a true leader, an educator, a hero and a lover of life that deserves our admiration and respect. We will miss her!

sadly,
Carol R. Schiller and family
