Ann Emerson Obituary

Ann Sturm Emerson, 65 ROCKPORT -- Ann Sturm Emerson, 65, passed away peacefully Monday, March 2, 2009, at her home in Rockport, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Born in Bronxville, N.Y., Oct. 29, 1943, Ann was the daughter of Henry Auguste Jr. and Harriet Crowell Williams Sturm. She attended Stoneleigh-Prospect Hill School, Hood College, and Boston University, where she graduated with a degree in English. Ann married Charles P. Emerson Jr. in June of 1966, and lived in Boston for seven years, working at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Women's Educational and Industrial Union. They returned to their Maine roots in 1972 and settled in Yarmouth, where they renovated and expanded a one-room schoolhouse which they moved from Pownal Center. In Maine Ann worked in advertising at the Forecaster in Falmouth and later at the Irregular in Kingfield; for the past 10 years Ann and Charlie have owned and operated the White Gates Inn in Rockport. Ann's interests were numerous and wide-ranging. Foremost among them was spending time with family and friends, particularly summers on the coast at Sebasco and winters in Carrabassett Valley while the children were growing up. Ann greatly enjoyed boating, tennis and skiing, and also loved to travel both near and far. Ann delighted in reading, and was a great student of history and of Queen Elizabeth I and Winston Churchill in particular. She is fondly remembered as an Anglophile of the first order. Ann was also a proud contributor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Brooke Hospital for Animals. Most of all, Ann will be lovingly remembered for her warm, caring spirit and sunny demeanor. Positive to the last, her uplifting sense of humor and love of laughter will serve as continual inspiration to friends and family alike. Ann is survived by her husband, Charles; her children, Peter Emerson of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and Mary Emerson of Rockport; her mother, Harriet Sturm of York; a brother, Henry Sturm of Durham, a sister, Mary Albright of York; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Portland will be private. Burial will be held in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins, Rockland. To sign Ann's online guestbook, please visit www.bchfh.com. Dear family:

Our thoughts are with you all as you mourn and yet celebrate Ann's life. I will always remember her beautiful smile and her quiet ways. She was such a thoughtful and beautiful person. I learned so much from Ann, working with her at The Forecaster, and watching how she processed things. She will be remembered for her kindness and sincere way that she lived her life.
Her love of the outdoors, her love for her family.

Dear Mary and family,
I'm so sorry for your loss and your pain. I remember thinking how "cool" your mom was, especially when she would pick us up from school in the grey Volvo with Phip and give us 3 Muskateers and Slurpees that we would devour outside of NYA waiting for Pete; she would share in our laughter as we told stories about our day. Her genuine compassion and smiling face made everyone around her feel welcome and at ease. I am lucky to have known such an incredible person. She will be missed.

Sometimes we are lucky enough to meet someone who puts a fingerprint on our hearts, who touches our soul, if even for a brief moment, Ann was part of a special group of girls who did just this to me. Our class at SPH and the years we spent together have always blessed me. You all were the angels I walked with on earth and Ann is now our gardian Angel. She will aways be with us. The years have past but as I sit today and reflect on those years a smile emerges and I feel happy. What a blessing to have had such a friend. May God hold her family close and ease the pain of her physical absence but know she is with you always..just close your eyes and you will feel her presence and know she is holding your hearts in her hands. You WILL see her again.Glod bless and keep you. Bonnie Bee Allen, SPH 62'

Emerson family...Please know that Ann's death while diminishing us in numbers has not diminshed the fond memories we have of her as a classmate and friend. It is those wonderful warm memories we have of our loved ones that sustain us and bring smiles to us in our grief .
Godpeed, Ann.
