Waterhouse, 94
SCARBOROUGH -- Robert E. Waterhouse, 94, passed away on March 6, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Togus.
He was born on Oct. 7, 1914, in Scarborough, the son of Herbert and Ethel (Laughton) Waterhouse. Robert attended grade school at the one-room schoolhouse on Scottows Hill Road and graduated from Scarborough High School.
He worked on the family dairy farm prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy, serving as a 2nd class signalman during World War II, in the American, African, European Theatres, and in the Southwest Pacific. He graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. While living in Indianapolis, he met his future wife Betty Amos. They returned to Maine and raised their family in Scarborough.
Robert is a Past Master of Gov. William King Masonic Lodge AF & AM and Mt. Olivet Lodge AF & AM. He also served as a District Deputy Grand Master. He was a member of the Scarborough Historical Society, and served for many years on the Scarborough School Board and the School Building Committee. He was a member of the West Scarborough Methodist Church.
Robert worked at S.D. Warren for several years, but for the majority of his life, he worked as a mason contractor. He was a talented self taught craftsman, who built his retirement home in Washington. He managed his own timber lot there, cutting timber and using his own sawmill to made craft into furniture. His woodworking included making many grandfather clocks, Lincoln rockers and roll top desks. Most of these he, with great pleasure, gave away to his family and friends. He made maple syrup from his own trees, had bee hives for honey, had grape vines and apple trees for making wine, and also had a large garden for his wife Betty. He had a wonderful memory and loved reciting poetry.
He is predeceased by his wife Betty; daughter MaryAnne; and his brother Laurence. Surviving are his three daughters, Marjorie Cantara and husband Mark of Saco, Virginia DePasqua and husband Robert of Newburyport, Mass., and Nancy Lynch of Scarborough; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco. At 7 p.m. a Masonic service will be held in his honor. www.dcpate.com.
