Frances Hunnewell Obituary

Frances Alvena Whittier Hunnewell PORTLAND -- Frances Alvena Whittier Hunnewell, beloved mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the Maine Medical Center surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Frances, a long time resident of South Portland and Little Sebago Lake, was born in South Portland on Dec. 23, 1919, the daughter of Harold and Mary Jane Whittier. She was a graduate of South Portland High School, class of 1937, where she participated in women's basketball. An ardent swimmer, she also participated in a swim competition from Willard Beach, South Portland, to Peak's Island. As a young woman Frances worked for several years as office manager at the Otis Elevator Company in Portland. On March 28, 1942, she married Reginald Hunnewell, a marriage which lasted 60 years until Reggie's death in 2003. Frances was a life-time member of the Pythian Sisters, Cumberland Temple. As a homemaker, her interests included sewing, listening to music, and especially cooking, establishing a reputation for her lovingly prepared and generously sized dinners as well as her home-made and beautifully decorated birthday cakes. Her greatest passion, source of pride, and joy, however, was the time she devoted to and spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Frances was predeceased by her grandson, Evan Nielsen. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Anne Hunnewell of Holderness, N.H., daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Terrence Fox Sr. of Portland, and daughter, Susan Hunnewell Nielsen of Gray; 10 grandchildren, Joshua and Isaac Hunnewell, Terrence Fox Jr. and Christopher Fox, Mary (Fox) Millett, Sarah (Fox) Forbes, Kathleen (Fox) Lambert, Anna (Nielsen) Conway, Hans and Kyle Nielsen; seven great-grandchildren, Skylar and Jacob Fox, Kayla Williams, Robert, Michelle and Cassidy Millet, and Dylan Forbes. Visitation hours will be at the Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Rd., Gray on Saturday, March 14 from 5-8 p.m. Also at Wilson Funeral Home, the funeral will be on Sunday, March 15, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Nancy Salisbury officiating. Interment will be in Forest City Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements under the care of Wilson Funeral Home. The family would like to acknowledge with gratitude all the compassionate care, guidance, and support they received from Frances's nurses, CNA's, doctor, and chaplain on the seventh floor, Maine Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Gray Fire and Rescue 125 Shaker Rd. Gray, Maine 04039 Frances Alvena Whittier Hunnewell
