Steven Miles Obituary

Steven Craig 'Bear' Miles, 61 LEWISTON -- Steven 'Bear' Miles, 61, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born Dec. 13, 1947, in Dover-Foxcroft, the second of five very beloved children born to Kenneth Miles and Winifred (Moulton) Miles. Steven attended Piscataquis Community High School in Guilford and graduated in 1967. Shortly after graduating from high school, Steven joined the U.S. Army and served 3 tours of duty in Vietnam as part of the 101st Airborne Rangers. During his service in Vietnam, Steven was a highly decorated soldier earning numerous prestigious medals for bravery and valor as well as campaign awards and citations. Like many soldiers who had experienced combat, he rarely shared those experiences with even his family and closest friends. Nicknamed 'Bear' for his large hands, burly 6'4' frame, and penchant for hunting, Steven joined the 76th Training Group in the Army Reserves and became a senior instructor. He conducted training classes at West Point, Tacoma, Wash. OCS, and numerous other military posts throughout the United States. He was a member of American Legion Post 158. Upon returning home from Vietnam, Steven worked at Guilford Industries for many years in a variety of positions and supervisory roles. Additionally, he worked for the Piscataquis Sheriff's department, and on the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department. For the last 20 years, Steven worked at Bath Iron Works in the Carpenter and Maintenance Shop earning various certifications in welding, fabrication, and crane operation. He also held the post of Shop Steward for the Local S6 Union for a number of years. In his spare time, 'Bear' enjoyed a wide variety of recreational activities embracing almost any outdoor sporting event. He thoroughly enjoyed long motorcycle rides with his wife Barbara, and trail-riding on his 4-wheeler. Some of his favorite pursuits were canoeing, bird hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and sharing deer hunts with his cherished Uncle Roger and many close friends. Rarely did Steve and his friends come home empty-handed from a hunt, but if they did, it only meant that the stories of the 'one that got away' and the jokes at the evening card game would get more colorful. Telling jokes was a trademark of Steven Craig 'Bear' Miles 'Bear.' He enjoyed telling tall tales for a laugh and tried to leave those he met with a smile and a warm place in their heart for having met him. This characteristic would hold true even as he undertook his battle with cancer. Through long hours of doctor's exams, CAT scans, treatments, and therapies, Steve continued to pull pranks and tell jokes even up to his final hours of life. Steven is survived by his devoted wife Barbara Miles of Lisbon Falls; his loving mother Winifred Miles of Guilford; brother Dennis Miles and his wife Shirley of Sioux Falls, S.D., sister Kenene Wintle of Manchester, N.H., brother Jerris Miles and his wife Glenda of Yankton, S.D., brother Tallus Miles and his wife Anita of Lewiston; four children, son Brian Miles and his wife Deanna of Newport, son Jason Miles and his wife Amanda of Sangerville, daughter Kendra (Miles) Hovencamp and her husband Paul of Canaan, and son George Miles and his wife Rachel of Abbot; seven much loved grandchildren, Logan, Lucas, Caleb, Saia Mae, Emma, Aydan and Ethan; many special nephews, nieces; aunts, uncles; cousins; in-laws and close friends. He was predeceased by his loving father, Kenneth Miles, in January of 2000. The family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all the staff at Central Maine Medical Center for their professionalism and heart-felt care during 'Bear's' last journey. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Stephen Anderson, Dr. Dick A. Versendaal, and Gail Randall for all their warmth, encouragement, and self -less care. Visitation will be held at Fortin/Auburn on Sunday from 12-1 p.m. A funeral will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. A potluck gathering in Bear's honor will immediately follow the funeral at VFW Capt. Frank W. Hulett Post, 588 Minot Ave., Auburn. To:
Bobbie and all of the children and family of Steve. I grew up with Steve, Dennis, Jerris, Kenene And Tallus. What a wonderful family they have always been. The Neighborhood we grew up in was never boring. We played together and grew up together. They were as close as our own brothers or sisters.
I am so saddened that Steve has had to go so far away from all of us. He was a very tough, strong individual, with a Big heart, but I'm sure he'll be there to greet us with that big grin of his and he will have scouted everything out for us. We played in fields, tree houses, Huge rocks and fishing in our brook. Did I mention, We were never bored. My heart aches for all of you that he was forced to leave ahead of us for awhile.
God Bless.

Love Cheryl Getchell (Tremblay) XO

Uncle Steve shall be missed more than what he could have ever imagined. Everyone has that one special story, that one good prank, or just something in how he touched someones life. Everyone in the family knows that Uncle Steve has always regarded himself as "The Gorgeous One". If there was a family gathering if he answered the phone that is what you would hear "Miles Manor, the Gorgeous One speaking". This often led to little disagreements of the "status quo" amoung the siblings. The "conehead" pics, the battle over which is better: army or marines, the hunting stories, the stealing of the slices of pie at holidays that a mouse apparently stole, are all the little things that will be missed.
Love You Uncle Steve

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been kind enough to share their memories, thoughts, and best wishes on Steve's passing. There have been many wonderful conversations by a lot of good folks who shared in Steve's journey on God's green earth. Please know how much that has meant to our whole family. But don't mourn Steve's passing, instead, celebrate the joy of his life by sharing a smile and a good story (yes, there are plenty of those to pass around!). This is the true legacy of my brother....joy, laughter, and fellowship. :)

To Brian and Jason,
I'm not sure if you'll remember us as you were very small when I used to babysit you. We lived downstairs from you on Notre Dame Ave, in Manchester NH. Our whole family remembers and has such fond memories of your dad, he was a wonderful man. My mom ( Beverly) my brother Bobby and I, send our condolences and wish you all the best.

My family was blessed to have Bear as a member of our family when he married my Aunt Barb. There is a huge void already without him, he will missed more than words can say. He was one of the finest people I have ever known. What a powerful indivudual, and such a positive impact he made on us all. He will be thought of today, and always.
