Bob Abt, CEO of Abt Electronics, died Thursday morning after a three-year struggle with cancer, the Chicago Tribune reports.

A retail legend, Abt took over management of Abt Electronics from his parents, who famously founded the store with $800 and helped transform it to, per the company, the largest single-store retailer of electronics and appliances in the nation. Abt was celebrated for his ability to maintain profitability and high customer loyalty in an era when many electronics-focused big-box retailers experienced wide fluctuations in their fortunes. A key part in this success was the lavish main showroom in Glenview, Illinois, which – according to the Tribune – has been referred to as the “Bellagio of retail.”

Abt was also critical in creating a strong online presence with savvy marketing that expanded the company’s influence nationwide. In June, Abt Electronics was listed by Consumer Reports as the best place nationally to buy electronics and the company consistently ranks as one of the best places to work in the Chicagoland area.

Raised in Chicago, Abt attended the University of Florida. According to ABC7 news, he is survived by his wife, Alice, and four sons, Mike, Ricky, Jon and Billy. The Chicago Tribune lists funeral services as scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Am Shalom, 840 Vernon Ave. in Glencoe.
