Ozell Sutton, a longtime civil rights activist who marched alongside the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama, has died, according to The Associated Press. He was 90.

No cause of death was announced. His daughter, Alta Sutton, told The Associated Press Sunday that her father died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta. She said the family had celebrated his birthday nearly a week ago.

Ozell Sutton marched for equal rights with King in Selma in 1965. He also was present at the Memphis hotel where King was assassinated in 1968.

Sutton, who was born Dec. 13, 1925, received his undergraduate degree in 1950 from Philander Smith College. In 1962, Sutton received an honorary doctorate from Philander Smith in recognition of his political activism in the civil rights movement.

He was also a founding member of the executive board of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Sutton was the 26th general president of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. As president, he was named one of the 100 most influential black Americans by Ebony magazine.

In 2012, Sutton was presented a Congressional Gold Medal from President Barack Obama as one of the first African-Americans to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also served as director of the U.S. Justice Department's Community Relations Service in Atlanta until he retired in 2003.
