Andrew Dorff, a songwriter who wrote No. 1 hits for country music stars Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney, has died at the age of 40, according to multiple news sources.

In a Facebook post early Tuesday, Lee Thomas Miller, president of NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International), wrote, "Our songwriting community is small and close, and this loss will hurt us all deeply. Andrew was a good man and a good friend. He was an elite songwriter at the peak of his life and career."

According to the Miami-Dade County medical examiner database, Dorff died Monday. On Tuesday morning, a representative of the medical examiner's office said that they were unable to release any other information because the investigation was still ongoing.

Shelton took to social media to express his grief over the death of his friend.

"Sad to be finding out about Andrew Dorff passing away...," Shelton tweeted. "Terrible tragedy. Prayers to his family."

Martina McBride tweeted, “So very sad to hear about (Andrew), Thanks for caring enough to write with me and for 'Ride.'"

Dorff was a son of songwriter Steve Dorff and brother of actor Stephen Dorff. Some of the hits that the songwriter penned were Blake Shelton’s “My Eyes’ and “Neon Light,” the Kenny Chesney hit "Save It for a Rainy Day," and "Somebody's Heartbreak” for singer Hunter Hayes.

In an interview for Music Row in October, Dorff said, "I want to keep writing songs that matter. There's not quite a greater feeling than having a song of yours come on the radio. You can't help it, you just turn it up a little louder. Having people tell you they heard your song on the radio and it affected them in some way, whether it's laughing, crying, dancing – that's why I do what I do."
