Parfitt was asked to join the band the Spectres featuring his future Status Quo partner Francis Rossi in 1967. The group renamed themselves the Traffic Jam and then shortly after they became Status Quo. He was a guitarist, singer, and songwriter with the group.

The band’s debut album arrived in 1968. The album featured the psychedelic rocker “Pictures of Matchstick Men,” which became their only hit single in the United States.

Parfitt recorded over 30 albums with Status Quo during his tenure in the band; he co-wrote some of the group's biggest hits including "Whatever You Want," "Again and Again," "Rain," and "Living on an Island." Parfitt had a heart attack in 1997 and needed quadruple bypass surgery. Once he recovered, he resumed playing in the band.

The band is very popular in Europe, Japan, and Australia, and the Status Quo opened the Live Aid concert in 1985. Parfitt and Rossi also appeared on the popular Band Aid charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in 1984.

Queen guitarist Brian May tweeted a tribute Saturday: "Shocked and so sad to hear of the passing of Rick Parfitt. Hard to find words. You truly joyfully rocked our world. RIP dear buddy."

Parfitt is survived by his wife, Lyndsay; their twins, Tommy and Lily; and Parfitt’s adult sons, Rick Jr. and Harry.
