Osborne began his acting career in the 1950s as a contract player for Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball’s Desilu Studios. He had roles on the TV show “The Californians” and in the pilot episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

Osborne said Ball suggested that he focus on becoming a journalist, "especially after she saw me act," he would often joke. In 1977, he began a long stint as a columnist for The Hollywood Reporter and became an entertainment reporter for KTTV in Los Angeles. He was the official greeter on the red carpet for the Academy Awards ceremony from 2006 to 2010.

A noted movie historian, he became the host for The Movie Channel in 1984; 10 years later, he started as the evening host of Turner Classic Movies. As host, he would offer historical information on the movie being shown along with interesting tidbits about the actors and directors. He was awarded a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame in 2006.
