Robert Dowdell, actor known for his role as Chip Morton on the 1960’s TV series “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” has died at 85, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor died Tuesday January 23, 2018, of natural causes in Coldwater, Michigan, family spokeswoman Diane Kachmar told The Hollywood Reporter.

Dowdell had a supporting role on the TV western series “Stoney Burke,” He played Cody Bristol, the sidekick of Jack Lord’s character on the series that ran from 1962-1963. Warren Oates and Bruce Dern were also regulars on the series.

He played lieutenant commander Chip Morton on Irwin Allen’s popular sci-fi series “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.” The show ran from 1964 until 1968.

He later guest starred on many television shows including “Dynasty,” “Hart to Hart,” and “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.”

Dowdell was born in Park Ridge, Illinois. After serving with the Army Corps of Engineering, he became an actor. He studied under highly regarded acting coach Wynn Handman.

He appeared in many plays including “Love Me Little.”

Dowdell was married to actress Sheila Connolly until their divorce in 1979.

Survivors include his cousins Harry, Linda and Ted, who told The Hollywood Reporter that Dowdell was "truly amazed so many of you were his fans and told him so, with posts, signed picture requests and cards."
