Lt. Col. (Ret.) Joseph Howard Hagan September 18, 1930 - August 26, 2013 Joseph H. Hagan, age 82, died August 26, 2013, in Pittsburgh, PA, surrounded by his wife and three children. Mr. Hagan grew up in Houston, TX and graduated from St. Thomas High School. He studied at Maryknoll seminaries in Lakewood, NJ and Glen Ellyn, IL, and later earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Hampshire. He joined the United States Air Force in 1951, where he flew jet fighters. While stationed at McGee Tyson AFB outside Knoxville, Tennessee, he met and soon married Helen Elizabeth Wilkie, to whom he was devoted for more than 58 years of marriage. He served as a forward air controller in Viet Nam where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Bronze Stars. He retired from the Air Force in 1973 as a Lieutenant Colonel, and settled in Tullahoma, TN working as a home builder, merchant, realtor, and real estate appraiser. He later moved to Jefferson City, TN and finally to Florence, SC, his home at the time of his death. In every community in which he lived, Mr. Hagan was an active member of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Hagan is preceded in death by his parents, Garnett Ignatius Hagan and Margaret Louise Edge Hagan of Houston, TX. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen Wilkie Hagan of Florence SC, children Joseph Howard (Maribeth) Hagan, Jr. of Nashville TN, Julianne Hagan (Randall Feenstra) of Pittsburgh PA, and Susan Elizabeth (Thomas) Gerth of Florence SC, brother Marlin Edward Hagan of San Antonio, TX, and nine adoring grandchildren: Jade and Molly Hagan; Eliot, Emily, and Cameron Feenstra; and Tom, Chrissy, Daniel, and Ben Gerth. A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church, in Florence, SC at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 31st, where the family will receive friends at a luncheon afterwards. Inurnment will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Jefferson City, TN on Sunday, September 1st at 4:30 pm followed by dinner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Appalachian Outreach, P.O.
