Ashby Jones Obituary


Ashby Turner Jones Ashby T. Jones, 72, of Lyndhurst, went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, July 22, 2013, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born on May 26, 1941, to the late Pearl Harlow Jones and Ernest W. Jones. Ashby was a United States Army veteran and he retired May 2000 from DuPont with 38 years of service. He will be remembered for his love of life, his gift of storytelling, his enjoyment of watching his grandchildren grow and play. Ashby was known only as "Pop" to so many. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting with the bow, black powder and rifle for deer, bear and his favorite, spring gobbler season. The family wishes to thank all who worked with them to care for him, including Augusta Health-Hospice of the Shenandoah and a special thank you to Leeann and Dr. Heck for such dedicated and excellent care. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roger W. Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Rebecca Boggs Jones; his three children, Ashby T. Jones of Waynesboro, Jennifer D. Huston of Stuarts Draft and Jesse S. Jones of Lyndhurst; two step children, Travis W. Garris and Amy E. Batkins, both of Waynesboro, and Scott Gochenour who was like a son to him; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Cecil and Eva Boggs of Waynesboro; sisters, Juantia Anderson and Florene Davis, both of Waynesboro; brothers, Paul and David Jones, both of Waynesboro; brother-in-law, Michael T. Boggs of Afton; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wilhelm of Fincastle; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Ashby also leaves a special daughter-in-law and caregiver, Michele Via Jones, who he called his "Special Angel" and special granddaughter and care giver, Mariah Batkins, who he called his "Little One"; special nephew, Matthew Jackson; great-nephew, John Warner; special friends, Bill Sellers, Nolen and Fred Huffman and Patty and Larry Miller, who visited faithfully each week; he also leaves behind his first wife, Brenda Morgan of Florida. The family will have a celebration gathering at his home, 17 Mt. Torrey Road, Lyndhurst, on Thursday, July 25, 2013, from 6 until 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren, Rt. 340N at 19 Browns Lane, Waynesboro, VA 22980. Those wishing may make donations in memory of Ashby to Hospice of Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medicine Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939 or Blue Ridge Chapel Mortgage Fund, 17 Brown Lane, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
