Durand Barrett Blatz Obituary


Durand Barrett Blatz Durand Barrett Blatz, of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, December 1, 2012.

He was born on July 27, 1918, in Ventnor, New Jersey.

Randy was a graduate of Cornell University, Class of 1940, and a veteran of World War II. He served in the United States Army Field Artillery from 1940 until 1946 in the United States, Germany, and Czechoslovakia, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in recognition of his exceptional aptitude as an artillery officer and a leader of men.

Throughout his life he remained proud of his service to his country. During the course of his career, he served in executive capacities and on the boards of directors of several publicly-held companies. Most notably, he was Chairman and CEO of Insilco Corporation from 1969 until 1982, retiring in 1987, after serving another five years as Chairman of the Board. He also served for over 20 years on the Board of Directors of Aetna Life and Casualty, in addition to numerous other public company board positions and charitable activities. He was an avid hunter, equestrian, skier, and sailor, and loved the outdoors, nature, and dogs.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Ipsen Blatz. They married in 1941, celebrating 71 years of marriage together this past March. Predeceased by his oldest daughter, Galen Blatz Shea, he is survived by four children, his son, Barry Blatz and wife, Betsy, of Morganton, North Carolina; his daughter, Megan and husband, Jay Goldstein, of Bolton, Connecticut; his son, John Blatz and wife, Kim, of Charlottesville; and his daughter, Elizabeth Blatz, of Charlottesville. There are also four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who will remember him with love.
