Samuel "Sam" LILLARD Obituary

LILLARD, Samuel "Sam," Francis. On January 14, 2013, Sam joined his loving parents, his siblings, five brothers, three sisters and special friends for a grand reunion in Heaven. He is survived by his devoted sister, Dorothy Lillard and her son, Glenn Manuel, of Eden, N.C.; multiple nephews and nieces; Sam's godchild, Slade Johnson Gormus of Richmond; his precious dogs, Ego and Ruckus; and a host of special friends, especially those in his coffee club. After graduating from Lynchburg College in 1957, he served in the U.S. Army. In 1965, Sam earned a degree in Hospital Administration from the Medical College of Virginia, now VCU. Sam enjoyed a remarkable career as an administrator for almost 30 years at Richmond Memorial Hospital. Prior to retirement, Sam was the administrator at Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital. He was active in health care professional organizations at the state and national levels. Sam served on many boards throughout his career and also as a volunteer after retirement. At the time of this death, Sam was an active member of the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority boards. Although often recognized during his career, receiving the 2012 "Making the Difference" Award from the Capital Area Health Network was particularly special. Sam volunteered his expertise to help at-risk groups, children, people with mental illnesses to achieve quality care. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Bliley's-Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street. Family will be available one hour prior to the service for visitation. Burial will be in Eden, N.C. The graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Ridge View Cemetery. Family expresses appreciation to the staff of Westport Nursing Center, St. Mary's Hospital and especially his personal coach, Stephanie, at Sheltering Arms Hospital. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond SPCA or a charity of your choice.
