Wilbur Lee Porter '37 Obituary

Wilbur Lee Porter, age 100, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility in Beloit, WI. He was born January 2, 1913 in South Beloit, IL, the son of Robert and Susan (Edwards) Porter. In 1937 he graduated from Beloit College with a major in English and History. Wilbur worked for 33 years with the YMCA's in Chicago, IL, Beloit, WI, Clinton, IA, and Sharon, Doylestown and Quakertown, PA. During WWII, he served 45 months in the Army's 28th Division at Camp Livingston, LA, where he was the managing editor of the camp weekly newspaper, The Communique. Wilbur served in leadership roles in various churches and civic groups, including the Kiwanis Club, and was a charter member of the Stateline Golden K in Beloit, WI. He was a great circus buff since childhood, and was a member of the Circus Historical Society since 1946. Over the years he built a complete model circus, which was on display at his home for many to enjoy. In 1990 he sold the model circus to a friend in England, where it is now on display. Wilbur is survived by Evelynn, his wife of 71 years, a son William (Ellen Aitken) Porter of Montreal, Canada, a daughter, Paula (Gary) Gritzmaker of Mondovi, WI, 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Susan (Edwards) Porter, a brother Robert (Ruth) Porter and two sisters, Edith Ethelyn Poratunsky (James) and Melba Jeanne Reimer (Stuart). Wilbur's Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Baldwin Cemetery, Afton Rd., Beloit, WI. Rev. Doug Gray of the United Church of Beloit (formerly Second Congregational Church) will be officiating. Memorials may be sent to the United Church of Beloit.
