Nancy Ude Cagle Obituary

Nancy Ude Cagle Nancy was born July 20, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of four girls of Arthur and Ellen Ude. Her father was District Attorney for the City of Detroit. Nancy's mother died when she was 10 years old. Possessed of superb secretarial skills, Nancy worked during summers and holidays in the executive secretarial pool of the Ford Motor Company. She attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, and completed her undergraduate work in education at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, where she had gone to live with her sister Margot. There she met Maury Cagle, a naval officer, and married him in 1958. They moved to Frankfurt, Germany, where they lived from 1959 to 1966. During those years Nancy had three sons: Gregory, David and Brian. They traveled extensively throughout western Europe before returning to the U.S. in 1966. They settled in Northern Virginia, where Nancy earned a Masters Degree in Library Science. After her divorce from Maury, she continued living in Northern Virginia, ending her professional career as Executive Secretary to the Managing Partner of Ernst & Young's worldwide educational center in Reston, Virginia. She retired to Fredericksburg, Virginia, and later moved to Glen Meadows Retirement Community in Glen Arm, Maryland. Nancy was a devoted mother and a proud grandmother. She was renowned in the family as an excellent cook. She was an avid bridge player, and also enjoyed many other creative outlets and intellectual pursuits, among them gardening, flower arranging, cookie and cake decorating, and biblical history. Until illness restricted her mobility, she was a faithful member of local Lutheran churches wherever she lived. Nancy died of breast cancer on August 21, 2013. She is survived by her three sons, her two daughters-in-law, Shirlee and Laura, and her four grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha, Tamara and Isabelle. A memorial service and reception for Nancy will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at Glen Meadows Retirement Community, 11630 Glen Arm Road, Glen Arm, Maryland 21057.
