ALBERT JOHN MAYER Obituary

MAYER, Albert John "Jack" Jr., another member of our Greatest Generation passed on to his well-deserved rest. Albert J. Mayer Jr. died in Bowling Green, Ky. on March 11, 2013. Jack was born August 31, 1921 in Surry County, Va. He lived most of his life in Rockville, Va., until he moved to Bowling Green, Ky. in 2005. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomasia Deitrick and Albert John; his sisters, Patti and Joann; his three wives, Shirley, Christine and Irene; his three children, Chuck, Barbara and Scott; and his stepson, Dennis Glenn. He is survived by his brother, Eugene (Leslie) of Kentucky; his stepsons, Thomas and Barry Glenn (Temple); their children, and many other loving family members. A WWII veteran who served in the Army Air Corps as a flight engineer, Jack participated in combat missions in Algeria, Italy, France and Germany. He was awarded a Bronze Star, the Croix De Guerre and many other medals for his service to his country. Following his honorable discharge on November 9, 1945, Jack worked for 32 years at A.H. Robbins. He had a strong belief in God and was a faithful member of Berea Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, sang in the choir and served on many committees. Jack loved his family, neighbors and his church. He was a Rockville Ruritan, an avid reader, an intelligent conversationalist, an exceptionally hard worker and a firm believer in a reward after death for a life well lived. He loved to play Bridge, ride his tractor, and had an innate sense of right and wrong. Jack will be missed, but all are comforted in the knowledge that his struggle is over and that he is at rest. A memorial service will be held 12:15 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Berea Baptist Church following the worship service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jack's name to Berea Baptist Church, 15421 Pouncey Tract Rd., Rockville, Va 23146, or to the Cochrane Rockville Branch Library, 16600 Pouncey Tract Rd., Rockville, Va. 23146.
