Charles Alexander Shaunesey Obituary


Charles Alexander Shaunesey Charles Alexander Shaunesey died on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the age of 97. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Phyllis Shaunesey; his daughter, Donna Shaunesey; and his granddaughter, Emily Davis. Born in Auburn Maine, he was a graduate of West Point and Harvard Business School. As a career United States Army officer, he was commander of service troops at both the Cairo and Potsdam Conferences, served in the Korean War, was Commandant of the Army's Food and Container Institute, Commander of the Quartermaster Service Command in Giessen, Germany; Deputy Commander of the Defense General Supply Center in Richmond, Virginia and Chief of Support Services in Washington, D.C. His awards include commendations for the wartime conference duty, the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit with an oak leaf cluster and Joint Services Medal. After nearly thirty years in the Army, he retired as a full Colonel and then turned to volunteering in the Westfield, New Jersey, area, serving as President of the Community Development Corporation, working with a non-profit thrift shop and volunteering with the Chaplain's Office at Overlook Hospital. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Westfield, where he served as Deacon, Moderator and Lay Minister. This honorable and loving man cared deeply for his family, his church and the community. He will be greatly missed. There will be a memorial service at the Colonnades at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2013. His ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. No memorial gifts are necessary, please honor his memory by carrying on his legacy of helping those in need.
