ROBERTS, Irvin Raymond Jr., of Varina, passed away on March 6, 2013, at the age of 92. He was born in 1921, one of eight children of the late Martha and Irvin Roberts. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle Duke Roberts. He is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, Shirley Roberts; and his children, Ken Roberts, Dale Baber, Bonnie Penney and Lisa Wright; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Irvin served his country in World War II as Staff Sergeant and Tank Commander in the 52nd Armored Infantry Battalion. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was captured by German soldiers and held as a prisoner of war. He received the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground combat, the Purple Heart, and numerous other honorary awards for his service. Irvin was retired from AMF and Molin's Machine Company. He was known for his skills as a builder and mechanic. In his lifetime he built two homes, several boats, and many other things to the delight of his family. He loved weekend farming, tinkering in his workshop and spending time with his family. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013 in the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Henrico, Va. 23231, where a chapel service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park. A reception will be held in the Nelsen Funeral Home Reception Center after interment.
