Whiteville: Dr. William Clyde Burns, Jr. , DVM 88 of Whiteville died Wednesday, May,16, 2012 at his residence. He was born in Bennettsville, S.C. Of the late William Clyde Burns and Clara Wicker Burns. He served in the U.S. Army in World War , II in the South Pacific as a Medic and was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He worked as a Veterinarian in Whiteville for over 50 years. Dr. Burns was a member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities including Lay minister for the Methodist Men's for the Wilmington District and was a part of the Baptist Mens Recovery Team.
In addition he served on the Columbus County Board of Health and the Whiteville City Board of Education. Dr. Burns helped coordinate the Wildlife Action Group where he was very active. He was also a member of the Christian Veterinarian Mission Association.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years; DesBert Ros Burns of Whiteville, N.C.; Daughters: Clara" Bookie" Burns Trogdon and husband David of Chadbourn, N.C. and Mary Frances B. McMillan and husband Phillip of Mullins, S.C.; Sons: William" Bubba Burns, III and wife Monica of Washington, N.C., Joseph Ros Burns and wife Trish of Apex, N.C. and Paul Weinel Burns of Whiteville, N.C.; Sister: Lora Evie "Burnsie" Thomas of Orangeburg, S.C. ; Grandchildren: Ian & Ann Worthington , Nathan Burns & Olivia, Ester Sutherland & Rick, Christy Burns, Grace Burns,DVM, Michael Burns , Camille Burns and Will McMillan; Great-Grandchildren: Paige Sutherland, Tres Sutherland,Ty Sutherland , Sky Sutherland, Dax Worthington and Kobe Wade
Funeral Services will consist of a Private Family Burial in the Elmwood Cemetery in Georgetown, S.C. on Friday, May 18,2012 at 2:00 p.m.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 20,2012 at 3:00 p.m. at the Whiteville United Methodist Church with Rev. William Boykin officiating .
Visitation will be on Sunday at the Whiteville United Methodist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service.
