Donald Clayton Townsend was born on August 24th, 1940 to Cyrus and Aulene Townsend of Sheridan and passed away June 6th, 2013 at his home in Wickenburg, Arizona. He began working as an auto parts man for a brief time until his father purchased the Rainbow Bar in Sheridan, where Don began working as a bartender. Don and his brother Jerry purchased the bar from their father with Don eventually purchasing full interest in the bar. Don had served as a past president of the Local Liquor Dealers Association as well as a past president of the Wyoming State Liquor Dealers Association. Don was instrumental in organizing a youth scholarship fund through the local Liquor Dealers Association. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Kalif Shrine, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was also honored as Small Businessman of the Year in Sheridan. Don had many friends with whom he shared many a story and goods time with. In the early years he loved stock car racing. He was also an avid outdoorsman and most enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. Don and wife Marilyn (Grace) raised their children: Donald Ray Townsend, Greg (Holly) Townsend , Bradford (Dana) Townsend- all of Sheridan. He was married briefly to Kimberly Harris and continued to remain close to step-daughter Vanessa Paredez (and her children) of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald Townsend and step-son Leonard Harris. He is survived by his wife Barbara Townsend of both Wickenburg and Sheridan, his children and grandchildren, brother Darrell Townsend (Sandy), sister in law Karen Townsend all of Sheridan, and his most beloved sister Barbara Mae Lilley of Sacramento, CA. He adored his grandchildren: Chali, Taylor, Kaycen and Tyrell (Townsend).
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 22nd at the First Presbyterian Church (2121 Colonial Drive) at 1:00 p.m. with a Celebration of Life immediately following at the Rainbow Bar. In lieu of flowers, please send personal donations made payable to the "Sheridan County Liquor Dealers Association",in care of the Townsend family to 1536 W. 16th Street, Sheridan, Wy. 82801. All donations will be donated towards the Scholarship Fund in Don's honor.
