NORWICH - John E. Murphy of Norwich, passed away Monday July 7th 2014 at Yale New Haven Hospital.
The son of Thomas and Florence Murphy, he was born on March 7th, 1933 and grew up in Franklin.
He attended Norwich Free Academy and was a member of the graduating class of 1952. While at NFA, he participated on the Cross Country and Track teams, but spent most of his time chasing his high school sweetheart, Eloise Lathrop. The two later married on June 12th, 1954 and the couple recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
He was a life member of the Yantic and East Great Plain Fire Companies; acting as chief from 1967-1974 at East Great Plain.
Despite working full time as a salesman for the Gallo Wine Merchants, he remained active with local volunteer fire services and the New London County Fire Chiefs Association; serving as President in 1999.
Throughout retirement, he spread his cheerful presence and the songs in his heart as a member of the Rose City Chorus. His true passion was the Austin Healy Club of America and he could often be found tinkering around in his garage.
John is survived by his loving wife, Eloise, along with their children and their spouses; John and Tammy Murphy, Lisa and Edward Lefrancois, and Todd and Kathy Murphy. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Courtney and her husband Kyle, Matthew, Sarah and her husband Christopher, Brittany, and Timothy, as well as his great grandson, John.
John was loved by his half sisters and brothers; Geraldine Wilson, William, Thomas, Jimmy, and John Sousa, Leona Roman, Sharon Allen, Jackie Clifton, Holly Drinkall, and Fran Correll.
Calling hours will be 5:30-8:30 on Friday at Woyasz & Son Funeral Home at 11 Jerome Road in Montville. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am at Woyasz & Son Funeral Home.
