JOSEPH L. HENDRICK Obituary


HENDRICK, Dr. Joseph L., Ph.D., 90, a native of Richmond, Virginia, passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 11, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Hilda Hendrick; his daughter, Renee Hendrick; his sons, Joel and Shaun Hendrick; and four grandchildren. He was born November 25, 1922, son of the late Francis Goode Hendrick and Marguerite Copperridge Hendrick, both of Richmond. Dr. Hendrick was a graduate of William and Mary, University of Richmond, University of Virginia and Harvard University. Dr. Hendrick served in the Army in North Africa and Italy during WWII. After serving in teaching and principal positions in Richmond public schools, he went on to receive his doctorate in education from Harvard. He also held superintendent positions in New York and Indiana. In 1966 he joined the Federal Government as regional commissioner of education under president Johnson, working through the Reagan administration, then worked as an educational advisor for the National Institute of Drug Abuse and retired as its Deputy Director. Before and after his retirement he was an avid sailor on the Chesapeake Bay and enjoyed spending time at the family farm in southern Virginia. An accomplished pianist, poet, craftsman and author, his self published book "Memories that Bind" documents several hundred years of Hendrick history and resides in the Library of Congress. Funeral services were held, Saturday, March 16, 2013 in the Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge with interment following in the Kenbridge Heights Cemetery, Kenbridge.
