"My sincerest condolences to the family of Lt. General Petersen. As a young African American Marine Corps officer in the late 70's and 80's, you were simply in awe becoming aware of the trials and accomplishments of this Trailblazer. There was also such a feeling of pride as I witnessed that historic event of his first star being pinned! Thank you General Petersen for opening doors - allowing many more deserving Marines to reach their potential."

"From Kaneohe MCB circa 1960, to Quantico MCB, my dad (an SBD dive bomber and later Air Traffic Control USMC), my mom and I had the great honor to have known and called Gen. Petersen a wonderful friend. As a kid he called me Tiger and when I last spoke several years back he still called me Tiger, asked how mom was doing and was just the best person I have ever known. They should do a movie about him. The best!!"
