CURTIS HOWARD Obituary


HOWARD, Dr. Curtis William "Bill" III, of Croaker, Va., age 92, died May 5, 2013 at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Kinston, N.C., and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a president of Zeta Psi Fraternity and manager of the basketball team. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War and later as a chaplain. He received both a Bachelors and Masters of Sacred Theology in Pastoral Counseling from Temple University and a Doctorate of Ministry from Westminster Theological Seminary. For 25 years, he taught psychology and counseled in career planning at Old Dominion University. During this time he also worked part-time as career counselor at CBN University, preached at Knox Presbyterian Church and other local churches, and retired from the Navy Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After his "retirement," Dr. Howard served as interim minister in Elizabeth City, N.C., Plymouth, N.C., Toano, Va., West Point, Va., and Richmond, Va. He served on the Leadership Prayer Breakfast Committee, was chairman of the Mental Health Association in South Hampton Roads, and served on the board of the Bob Boyd Evangelistic Association. For the past 19 years, Bill has been an active and beloved member of Olive Branch Christian Church. He devoted his life to doing God's work. Howard was preceded in death by his wives, Nancy Suiter Howard, Catherine Embry Romm Howard and Louise Jefferson Moulds Howard; his siblings, Virginia Howard McGahey, Nancy Howard Sitterson, Eleanor Howard Cummings and Alex Howard. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Curtis Howard of Richmond; stepdaughter, Jean Romm Atkinson (Brian) of Whitmore Lake, Mich.; stepson, Edward Romm (Wanda) of Virginia Beach; stepson, Jefferson Moulds (Brent Anderson) of Washington, D.C.; stepdaughter, Stacey Moulds (Charles Field) of Richmond; grandchildren, Mary Catharine Atkinson Kozina (John) of Cleveland, Ohio, Laura Atkinson (Matt Cleveland) of Brighton, Mich., Edward Atkinson (Dorothy) of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Elizabeth Moulds of Washington, D.C.; three great-grandchildren, Evan Kozina, Catharine Kozina and Brady Cleveland; and two brothers, Lee Howard of New Haven, Conn., and Pierce Howard of Charlotte, N.C.; as well as many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 13, at Olive Branch Christian Church, 7643 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg, Va. 23188, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St., West Point, Va. 23181. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Eleanor and Curtis Howard Scholarship Fund at Gordon Street Christian Church in Kinston, N.C.; Barton College (formerly Atlantic Christian College) in Wilson, N.C., and Olive Branch Christian Church. The family also wishes to thank the caring staff at the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and the many friends who visited and lent support. Tributes may be posted at www.vincentfh.com.
