George Dunham Barksdale George Dunham Barksdale, 84, of Waynesboro, died on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at hIs residence. He was born on April 13, 1928, in Waynesboro, Virginia, a son of Lewis O. Barksdale and Alma Martin Barksdale. George was a graduate of Waynesboro High School and Davidson College. A veteran of the Korean War, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve. He also retired as president of J. L. Barksdale Furniture Co. George was a long-time Rotarian, a member of the Waynesboro Rotary Club and then, in 1986, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Waynesboro-East Augusta, where he became a Paul Harris Fellow. For 71 years, he was a member and officer of Waynesboro First Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Lancaster; brother J. L. Barksdale; and stepmother, Emily Kemp Barksdale. Surviving are his wife, Betty H. Barksdale; daughter, Holly Bennett and husband, Cary; son, G. David Barksdale and fiancee, Debby Masino; grandsons, Ryan Bennett and wife, Jenn, and Shane Bennett; great-grandchildren, Hollister and Berkeley Bennett; brother, and his wife, the Reverend John O. and Virginia Barksdale; in-laws, John Hollister, Lewis Lancaster, and Carol Barksdale; and numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Glen A. Holman. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary International Foundation, Hospice of the Shenandoah, Waynesboro First Presbyterian Church, or charity of one's choice.
