George Paulson Obituary

George Paulson, age 87, passed away on August 6, 2013, he was born May 6, 1926, in Council Bluffs, to Mike and Sima Paulson, George died at home and according to his wishes.

He was many things to many people: a World War II veteran, a successful businessman, President of the school board, and a family man who dedicated his life to the community.

George attended Thomas Jefferson High School but joined the U.S. Marine Corps prior to graduation after war broke out. He spent a year training on the Big Island of Hawaii before engaging in battle on Iwo Jima where he lost his leg in combat on March 9, 1945. He always called that day the luckiest day of his life.

He returned to Council Bluffs following extensive rehabilitation in Philadelphia for the loss of his leg above the knee. He got his high school degree and later attended Iowa State University where he studied civil engineering. He returned to Council Bluffs and started Paulson Construction Company, that he and his wife Lubi, ran until their retirement. A couple of sites included the Nonpareil and Masonic Temple buildings.

George served on many business and community boards and was always dedicated to improving conditions for all the citizens of Council Bluffs. He served on the city's School Board for two terms.

Even though he had lost his leg above his knee and was forced to strap a 40 pound artificial leg on for support, George was never disabled-not in his mind. He rarely complained and to this day some people never knew of his condition. He was an inspiration to us all.

George was preceded in death by Lubi, his wife of 63 years; brothers, Mike and Joe Paulson; and sisters, Mildred Malloff, Margaret and Helen Paulson.

George is survived by his sister, Mary Alencich (Steve); and brother, Nick (Mary Ann); and sons, Marc (Ramona), Steve (Janna); and daughter, Annie Gillespie (Carroll "Trey"); grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Paulson and Ian and Lauren Ann Gillespie.

Visitation Thursday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services Friday, 1 p.m., all at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. George will be laid to rest with wife Lubi at Walnut Hill Cemetery.
