Paul Garst Obituary

Paul Andrew Garst The memorial service celebrating the life of Paul Andrew Garst, 83, of Waynesboro, Virginia, will be held 1 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at Hermitage Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro. The Reverend Dr. Wray Sherman III will officiate. Memorials may be made in his memory to Hermitage Presbyterian Church, 46 Hildebrand Church Rd., Waynesboro, VA 22980. Paul Andrew Garst died suddenly at his home near Waynesboro, on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Born on December 29, 1929, in Sangerville, Virginia, he was the son of the late Paul Smucker and Gladys Andrew Garst. He graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1948, and later attended Madison College. He proudly served his country as a combat Marine during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. Paul was a devoted family man. He married Elinor J. Estep on June 9, 1953, and they recently celebrated 60 years of love. Their son, Michael, his wife, Sandy, and their five children, Hannah, Adam, Kimberly, Sam, and Ben, of Fishersville, Virginia, were a source of great happiness. He is survived by them, his brother, Marshall Garst and wife, Freda, of Bridgewater; his sister-in-law, Mary Estep Martin and husband, Francis, of Maryland; beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors who enjoyed his humor and friendship. He was a faithful member of Hermitage Presbyterian Church. Paul became a born again Christian in 1968, and faithfully served his God by his testimony to family, friends, and co-workers. He was an honest, truthful, generous, and caring man. He enjoyed his lifelong career in sales and retired in 1994, from Foreman, Inc. He and Elinor raised Angus cattle, sheep, Border Collies and a few of everything else on a 160 acre ranch in Fluvanna County, Virginia, from 1980 until 1995. Whatever Paul did, he did with great passion and that his many hunting, fishing, farming, dog training, gun owning, motorcycle, and sports car friends will attest to. He intensely studied his every interest until he became an expert in the field. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. At Paul's direction, his body was cremated and Johnson's Funeral Service in Grottoes, is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.johnsonfs.com.
