HODDER, Robert Samuel, 85, of Midlothian, died Monday, January 28, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hamlett Hodder. He was a retired Engineer and Building Official for the Counties of Chesterfield and Henrico. Born in London, he served in The Royal Marine Corps as a commando and was then educated at Regent Street Polytechnic and the Royal College of Music. After emigrating from England in 1953, he settled in Richmond where he sang professionally in houses of worship in Richmond, including First Baptist, Centenary Methodist, Temple Beth Ahabah, River Road Church, Baptist, and St. Stephen's Episcopal; in Washington, D.C. with the National Cathedral Choral Society; and in England with numerous Salvation Army bands and choirs, the BBC Singers, and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and others. In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his children, Robert Hodder of Alexandria, Kathryn and her husband, Bill Vick, of Rockville, Elizabeth and her husband, Stephen Kahn, of Berkeley, Calif., John and his partner, Marios Stilianakis, of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and their mother, Sue Pitts Hodder. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Elizabeth Reece and her husband, Jerry, of Centreville, Margaret Sharp and her husband, Brian, of Blacksburg, and Joseph Blackburn and his wife, Beth, of Chesterfield; and 13 grandchildren, Fariss, Carter, Tyler, Zoe, Noah, Kathleen, Ben, Calvin, Meredith, Cameron, Libby, Jade and Jordan. Bob was the son of Salvation Army Colonels Emily Griggs and George Albert Hodder, who lived in England. His surviving brothers are The Rev. Albert Hodder of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and Retired Salvation Army Commissioner Kenneth Hodder and his wife, Marjorie, of Sun City Center, Fla. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 23, at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 2341 Winterfield Road, Midlothian, Va. 23113, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Robert Samuel Hodder Fund, The CVAC Salvation Army School for Performing Arts, c/o The Salvation Army of Central Virginia, 2 West Grace St., Richmond, Va. 23220, att.: LM.
