CONNELLY, William Joseph, 84, of Richmond, Va., died, surrounded by his loving family on February 12, 2013, after a long battle with kidney disease. He will be remembered as a gentleman, a dedicated husband, loving father, doting grandfather and kind friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellen Hogan and Robert E. Connelly; his sister, Elizabeth C. McKenna; and brothers, John J. "Jack" Connelly and Robert E. "Bob" Connelly Jr. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Bell Connelly; daughters, Leslie Connelly Strickler and husband, Al, and Lisa Connelly Tomillon and husband, Skip; and five adoring grandchildren, Olivia, Harrison and Maggie Strickler and Nicholas and Kenna Tomillon; and a clan of cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill was a graduate of Benedictine High School and RPI Business School. In high school, he worked as a stringer for the Associated Press, and was one of the first to read news from around the world on the wire, including the news that WWII ended. He also was a Golden Gloves boxer, and shared stories with good friend, World Champion boxer, Jack Dempsey. He worked as a State Trooper before becoming an award-winning sales manager of Republic Lumber Co. He retired as a senior consultant for the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Transportation, and later served as CFO of Etre Communications, Inc., and Strickler Medical, Inc. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean War. Bill loved the homeland of his family, Ireland, and was honored with an Irish citizenship for his 76th birthday. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., with a Rosary service immediately following. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 6006 Three Chopt Rd.
