Charlene Jessie Sterling Obituary

Charlene Sterling Charlene Jessie Sterling died on Thursday, January 10, 2013, following a short illness. She was born on April 17, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, to Eldora Van Vliet, and was the youngest of seven children. After graduating from Michigan State University, she moved to California where she taught history before meeting and marrying the love of her life, James Warren Sterling.

They had three children born in California, Michael Warren, Andrew Jordan, and Amy Jo before moving to Fort Washington Forest, Maryland, where their fourth child, Marc David, was born. They moved to Charlottesville in 1973 and then built a home in Crozet, Virginia. One of her greatest joys in life at home in Crozet was sitting at the deck table under the sugar maple planted by her husband with a good book, a cold drink or just visiting with family, friends, and pets. She is survived by her sons, Michael and Andrew, and her daughter, Amy and also two beloved grandchildren, Chessie May and John Sterling Aeron-Thomas.

She was predeceased by her husband as well as her son, Marc, who died shortly before his fifth birthday. Her family would like to thank the Intensive Care Unit , Palliative Care Unit, Cornell 1 and 3 staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Thanks are also extended to the staff at Colonnades Skilled Nursing Center.The compassion they showed to both our mother and to us was very much appreciated.

A funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013. Visitation will be held at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 7 until 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2013. A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at St Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery, 13401 Piscataway Road, Clinton, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Crozet, VA 22932, whom she credited with saving her life last year, or to the new Crozet Library Fund, 1500 Gordon Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
