Tommy Hanson, a former Major League Baseball starting pitcher, died Monday of organ failure, according to multiple news sources. He was 29.

Hanson pitched for the Atlanta Braves from 2009 to 2012. He went 21-15 with a 3.16 ERA for the Braves from 2009-10 before coping with various arm injuries.

The right-hander was deemed the top prospect in the Braves' farm system six years ago.

After pitching for the Braves in the majors, Hanson pitched his final MLB season in 2013 with the Angels following a trade.

Although he agreed to a major league contract with the Texas Rangers in early 2014, he was released before the start of the season. Soon thereafter, he signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox. He started the season in AAA baseball before being placed on the disabled list June 12 and missing the rest of the season.

In May 2015, Hanson agreed to a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Hanson was born Aug. 28, 1986, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com relayed the news about Hanson's death early Tuesday.

"A Braves representative confirmed that some of Hanson's former teammates were near Hanson when he passed away at Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital late Monday night," Bowman reported.

The Braves shared their condolences in a tweet.

The Atlanta Hawks also tweeted their condolences: "Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Tommy Hanson, as well as our @Braves family today."
