Richard Dodson Obituary

Richard Dodson

Richard Dodson, 72, of Brightwood, Virginia, entered the presence of the Lord on Sunday, November 4, 2012, at his residence. He was born on December 2, 1939, in Rappahannock County. Richard succumbed peacefully after fighting an intense, but courageous, battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Pearl Dodson; a sister, Rena Ferguson; and a brother, William Dodson. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 52 years, Mary Dodson; his children, Carolyn Yowell and husband, Gerald, of Madison, Michael Dodson and wife, Jane, of Culpeper, Doreen Benedetto and husband, Richard, of Warrenton, and Thomas Dodson and wife, Kimberly, of Weyers Cave; thirteen grandchildren, Matthew, Justin, Brian, and Laura Yowell, Farren and Carlyle Dodson, Kyle Benedetto and fiancee, Brittney Jones, and Ryan Benedetto, Morgan, Maggie, Hannah, Cabeb, and Olivia Dodson. Also brothers, Roosevelt, Wilson, and Ray Dodson; sisters, Bertha Jenkins and Rebecca Dodson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was retired from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative where he was well respected as a line foreman. He drove a tractor and trailer as a young man. His skill and integrity as a tree surgeon was renown, and he continued until becoming ill. He was a member of Thoroughfare Bible Church. He served on the board of officers and was a legionnaire in the Loyal Order of Moose in Culpeper. Richard enjoyed the outdoors and many will remember seeing him walking miles in and around Brightwood. Some of his favorite activities were shooting pool, bowling, and pitching horseshoes -- accumulating scores of trophies over the years. Lately, the game of choice had become corn hole. He was a modest man; however, he enjoyed watching everyone clamor to be on his team! Most importantly, Richard was a selfless, loyal man who loved his family, and enjoyed his friendships. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and forever put others before himself. He will be greatly missed by all but especially by one who called him "Honey", four who called him "Dad", four more who considered him a second Dad, and thirteen (and others) who knew him as "PopPop". Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison conducted by the Reverend Mike Vaughan with interment at Thoroughfare Bible Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family is grateful to the teams of medical support staff at the Emily Couric Center Center, University of Virginia and Hospice of the Piedmont.

Memorial contributions may be made to Emily Couric Cancer Center, 2410 Old Ivy Road, Suite 205, Charlottesville, VA 22903-4827 or the Hospice of the Piedmont , 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
